OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
WESTMINSTER LIONS
Coach: Ted McMillen
Last season: 8-3 overall, 4-1 league
Scouting report: Westminster will probably look to air it out more with 6-foot-1 Noah Melbon, a transfer from Tustin, behind center. Melbon will try to get the ball into the hands of Isayah Anderson, who was the team’s top receiver a year ago. Tight end Brandon Cox is not a bad option, either. The Lions have several options at running back. Jacob McGookin is a between-the-tackles runner, while Josh Avila has the speed to find the edge.
Bottom line: Westminster is a perennial contender for the league title. The Lions are playing more players on both sides of the ball this year, which could make fatigue a factor late in games.
Players to watch: Andrew Acosta, OT/DE, Sr.; Isayah Anderson, WR/FS, Sr.; Brandon Cox, TE/MLB, Sr.; La’au Masaniai, OG/DE, Jr.; Noah Melbon, QB, Jr.
