OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
SEGERSTROM JAGUARS
Coach: Joseph Tagaloa
Last season: 8-3-1 overall, 5-0 league
Scouting report: Segerstrom returns just three starters from last year’s league championship team, but it is far from pushing the panic button. Coach Joseph Tagaloa says the program is as big as it has ever been, with an estimated 185 kids across all levels. Two of the returning starters will be hooking up in the passing game. Marcos Avalos, a three-year starter at quarterback, will look to connect with Gus Guerrero, who was the team’s leading receiver with 26 catches for 433 yards as a junior. On defense, the Jaguars give cornerback JC Caravez free reign to line up wherever he wants and to jump routes as he chooses.
Bottom line: The defending league champions believe they are still in the hunt, and Avalos’ experience running the offense is reason enough to for the Jaguars to be confident this fall.
Players to watch: Emerson Aldana, DT, So.; Marcos Avalos, QB/P, Sr.; JC Caravez, RB/CB, Sr.; Gus Guerrero, WR, Sr.; Denilson Santamaria, RB/CB, Sr.
