OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
OCEAN VIEW SEAHAWKS
Coach: Luis Nunez
Last season: 5-5 overall, 2-3 league
Scouting report: It’s hard to replace Division 1 scholarship quarterback, Blake Meyer (Lafayette College), but Ocean View will do its best with the athletic Xavier Salgado. Receivers Nathaniel Washington and Adam Meyer will be his main targets. Both players have the ability to outjump defenders to catch passes. The Seahawks felt they should have been considered for an at-large spot in the playoffs last year. They have taken steps to strengthen their nonleague strength of schedule, adding games against league champions Brethren Christian and Katella.
Bottom line: Lack of depth on the offensive line makes health imperative for the Seahawks. If this team is to make the playoffs, left side protectors Juan Torres and Andrew Helmer have to duplicate their second-team all-league campaigns from a year ago.
Players to watch: Victor Castillo-Hidalgo, MLB, Sr.; Chase Foreman, WR/SS, Sr.; Andrew Helmer, OG, Jr.; Xavier Salgado, QB/SS, Sr.; Juan Torres, OT, Sr.
