OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
RANCHO ALAMITOS VAQUEROS
Coach: Mike Enright
Last season: 8-3 overall, 4-1 league
Scouting report: When talking about this year’s team, the returning offensive group is a good place to start. Senior quarterback Blake Culbert is back after a 27-touchdown, 2,690-yard performance in 2015. Miguel Rosales (585 rushing yards, eight touchdowns) is back along with Jesse Candelario (649 receiving yards) and Cristian Villareal (500). Rancho Alamitos also has four starters returning on the offensive line. On defense, the Vaqueros return five starters, led by Franky Gonzalez, Francisco Leiva and Nathan Guthrie. Gonzalez had eight sacks last year. If the Vaqueros can avoid any serious injuries, they should be in the mix for the league title.
Bottom line: This is a team with the potential to be one of the better offensive teams in the county. They could be fun to watch, unless you have to design a plan to stop them.
Players to watch: Blake Culbert, QB, Sr.; Cristian Villareal, WR, Jr.; Jess Candelario, WR, Sr.; Siuai Tiliaia, OT, Sr.; Colby Mackey, OT, Jr.; Franky Gonzalez, DE, Sr.
