OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
BOLSA GRANDE MATADORS
Coach: Doug Cooper
Last season: 0-10 overall, 0-5 league
Scouting report: The Matadors are going through a period of transition as defensive coordinator Doug Cooper moved into the coaching job vacated as Matt Brinkerhoff moved to Utah. Cooper has been on Bolsa Grande’s staff for eight years. Cooper takes over a team with several three-year returners and seniors. The Matadors have eight starters returning on offense and six on defense. Cooper sees depth at some key positions (linebacker, running back and wide receiver). Returning all-league wide receiver Isaiah Moore and running backs Elian Gallegos and Cristian Najera are three key returners. On defense, Najera, a middle linebacker, will team up with Alex Huynh and Christian Medina.
Bottom line: The Matadors are focusing on taking positive steps in the league. They’ve only won five league games since 2008.
Players to watch: Andrew Guillen, QB, Jr.; Elian Gallegos, RB, Jr.; Cristian Najera, MLB, Sr.; Isaiah Moore, WR, Sr.; Juan Matias, OG, Sr.; Christian Carreto, DT, Sr.
