OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:

LA QUINTA AZTECS

Coach: Andy Diaz

Last season: 4-6overall, 2-3 league

Scouting report: One word best describes the attitude around the La Quinta football program: excitement. The Aztecs finished in fourth place last year. Coach Andy Diaz says this is perhaps the most athletic team at La Quinta in a long time. Coupled with the revamped playoff system, he believes that things are trending upward for the Aztecs. Diaz is looking forward to the play of sophomore quarterback Michael Nadeau (6-3, 195). Nadeau, who led the freshman team to the league title last season, will allow the Aztecs to throw the ball a lot more this year. The development of Nadeau will be a key to the Aztecs’ season. Look for Tony Ta (6-4, 205), Nathan Medellin and Dylan Do to be his main targets, and for Tam Le to contribute from the running back spot. The Aztecs have eight starters returning on defense with Peter Vu leading the charge.

Bottom line: The Aztecs haven’t made the playoffs since 2010. If their young players can adjust and continue their success from the summer, that streak could end this season.

Players to watch: Michael Nadeau, QB, So.; Dylan Do, WR, Jr.; Tony Ta, WR, Jr.; Nathan Medellin, WR/FS, Sr.; Tam Le, RB, Sr.; Peter Vu, LB, Sr.
