OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:

LAGUNA BEACH BREAKERS

Coach: John Shanahan

Last season: 2-8 overall, 0-5 league

Scouting report: John Shanahan is the team’s third coach in three seasons. This is his stint as a varsity head coach after a successful run as JSerra’s freshman coach. Laguna Beach faces an uphill battle with low numbers in the program. Only 54 players came out for the team in the spring. The Breakers lost two-year starting quarterback Jack Simon to graduation, and now junior Curtis Harrison steps in. Harrison completed his only three pass attempts last season. Senior Matt Hayes led the team in receiving and was third in rushing a year ago. He is also skilled returner. There are plenty of seniors at skill spots, and the defensive front seven, which includes linebacker Ryan Blaser.

Bottom line: There are a lot of challenges facing the Breakers if they want to win more games this season, but there is potential for that to happen.

Players to watch: Matt Hayes, RB/CB, Sr.; Curtis Harrison, QB, Jr.; Ryan Blaser, OLB/WR, Sr.; Adam Armstrong, FS/WR, Jr.; Henry Syvertsen, RB/DE, Jr.
