OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
GODINEZ GRIZZLIES
Coach: Michael Echaves
Last season: 7-5 overall, 4-1 league
Scouting report: Godinez went winless in 2014 but made a huge jump last season, its first under Coach Michael Echaves. The Grizzlies will try to build on that success. They return all of their key player, including last season’s co-league MVP, quarterback Bryan Ibarra. The senior rushed and passed for a combined 3,050 yards and 35 touchdowns, but he has been suspended for the first two games of the season. Sophomore running back Patrick McMorris, will start the season at quarterback. Running back Andy Sosa and wide receiver Izak Verduzco, both juniors, give the offense two more weapons. All three starting linebackers return, including senior middle linebacker Richy Tochihuitl, who was first-team all-league in 2015.
Bottom line: Godinez is poised to win its first league title and make a deep playoff run.
Players to watch: Bryan Ibarra, QB, Sr.; Richy Tochihuitl, MLB, Sr.; Andy Sosa, RB, Jr.; Izak Verduzco, WR/RB, Jr.; Patrick McMorris, RB/QB, So.
