OCVarsity Kickoff '16: Estancia preview

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:

ESTANCIA EAGLES

Coach: Mike Bargas

Last season: 3-7 overall, 2-3 league

Scouting report: Estancia should be back in the thick of playoff contention. Senior running back Jordan Balcazar returns and could benefit from stronger play by the offensive line. Juniors Jorge Castellanos (270 pounds) and Jay Enciso (250) will be the important players on both sides of the ball. The quarterback situation is unsettled. The team has two seniors, Eric Carrasco and Tyler Ross, vying for the job. Coach Mike Bargas said early in the season both players will get a chance to show what they can do. Ross will also see time at free safety. A mobile group of linebackers stand out on Estancia’s defense.

Bottom line: Estancia appears to have a good chance of making it back to the CIF-SS playoffs, but the Eagles must avoid injuries given their high number of two-way players and lack of depth.

Players to watch: Tyler Ross, SS/QB/WR, Sr.; Eric Carrasco, QB/WR, Sr.; Jordan Balcazar, RB, Sr.; Jay Enciso, DL/OL, Jr.; Jorge Castellanos, DL/OL, Jr.
