OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
SONORA RAIDERS
Coach: Daniel Morales
Last season: 9-3 overall, 3-2 league
Scouting report: A former La Habra High quarterback now coaching his longtime rival? Yeah, Daniel Morales is still getting used to the new digs too, but an opportunity to coach in the community he grew up in was too good of an opportunity to pass up. The first-year head coach has his work cut out for him, as Sonora graduated 16 starters, including star quarterback Cole McDonald and first-team All-County running back Jacob Fimbres. That duo accounted for 3,464 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns last year, roughly 96 percent of the Raiders vaunted rushing attack. With a new offense in place and fresh faces starting across the field, Sonora will have to find a new identity under Morales, and that takes time.
Bottom line: Sonora is another team with tons of question marks, most significantly, how is it going to produce points? This first year will be a learning experience for Morales and his roster of young players.
Players to watch: Ethan Cook, TE, Sr.; Edward Corros, CB, Sr.; Christian Rodarte, OG, Sr.; Alex Valdez, LB, Sr.; Landon Williams, WR/CB, Sr.
