OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
TROY WARRIORS
Coach: Kevin Hastin
Last season: 5-6 overall, 2-3 league
Scouting report: There’s a lot to like about Troy, and it begins up front with an offensive line that features five seniors, four of whom are three-year starters. That will only help in the development of dual-threat quarterback Josiah Norwood, a player Coach Kevin Hastin referred to as “one of the most explosive athletes in the league.” After averaging just 15 pass attempts through his first six starts as a sophomore, the Warriors depended on Norwood’s arm much more in their final five outings, asking him to throw upwards of 27 times a game. Hastin acknowledged his skill position players lack varsity playing experience, but added the potential is there. Eight starters are back on defense, including all-league selections Asher Frow, Bashar Mamlouk and Brett Ferguson.
Bottom line: Troy should be a consistent bunch considering it brings back so much experience, but it still trails La Habra and Buena Park. If the Warriors defense can step up its play, they can narrow that gap.
Players to watch: Brett Ferguson, SS, Sr.; Asher Frow, DE, Sr.; Bashar Mamlouk, LB, Sr.; Josiah Norwood, QB, Jr.; Trevor O’Brien, C, Sr.; Skyler Taylor, RB, Jr.;
