1. Mater Dei, 3-0 (100 points) The Monarchs defeated Upland, a team that earlier this month was No. 10 in the state rankings, 28-14. Their defense held Upland to 1.7 yards a carry.

2. Servite, 2-1 (88) Travis Waller’s improvisational passing led the Friars to a 42-21 win over Edison. Servite’s loss was to nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. The Friars next play another nationally-ranked team.

3. JSerra, 4-0 (80) The biggest wins are league wins, but the Lions’ 42-28 win over state-ranked St. Bonaventure of Ventura is their biggest this year so far and about as important as a nonleague win could be.

4. Santa Margarita, 3-1 (67) The Eagles found out what Servite already knew: Bishop Gorman is one fast football team. Santa Margarita lost to Gorman in Las Vegas, 41-10.

5. Orange Lutheran, 3-1 (58) As expected, the Lancers overwhelmed Cabrillo of Long Beach, 52-8. Lutheran scored touchdowns on five of its first six possessions.

6. Corona del Mar, 4-0 (49) Sea Kings beat Newport Harbor for the second year in a row for the first time since 1988. The players, and even some of the coaches, weren’t born yet in ’88.

7. Tesoro, 3-1 (32) Four touchdown passes for Modster in a 38-7 win over West Covina. Top two-ranked public school teams in county football meet next.

8. Mission Viejo, 2-2 (31) Brock Johnson’s three touchdown passes highlighted a fine all-around game for the Diablos in a a 49-21 road win over Norco.

10. Edison, 3-1 (13) Chargers made a deeper, more-skilled Servite team work for it in a 42-21 loss to the Friars. Quarterback Matt Gane and teammates showed plenty of moxie.
