LONG BEACH – Quarterback Jack Telenko threw for three first-half touchdowns and Los Alamitos’ defense held Canyon to 53 yards en route to a 46-0 win at Veterans Stadium on Thursday night.

Telenko had scoring passes of 10 yards (to Jacob Gasser ) and 7 yards (to Joe Wysocki) in the first quarter, and Matt Locher added a 4-yard run early in the second quarter.

Trailing 20-0 Canyon mounted a solid drive late in the second quarter, moving the ball from its 36 to the Griffins’ 14 thanks to five completions by quarterback Jason Harman. But on third and 6, Harman was rushed, and after losing 16 yards, he fumbled the ball. Will Armstrong scooped it up and rumbled 70 yards for a touchdown.

“That was a big play for us because they were kind of making a little stand and we turned it around on them,” said Los Alamitos coach John Barnes. “That was smart play by Armstrong to pick it up and go.”

Schuyler Whitehead led the Griffins’ ground attack with 89 yards, while Keynin Charbonnet added 78.

“We ran the ball well,” said Barnes. “We were without our best back (Denzal ) Brantley, so it was really exciting to see a couple of guys carry the ball that haven’t carried it that much.”

Harman had 77 passing yards for Canyon while running back Daniel Casas was held to 15 yards.

Los Alamitos hosts San Juan Hills on Thursday, while Canyon plays Esperanza at Yorba Linda High next Friday.
