OCVarsity’s team preview for 2016:

EL TORO CHARGERS

Coach: Mike Mayoral

Last season: 5-5 overall, 1-3 league

Scouting report: The Chargers move to the Sea View League for this season and next season as part of the Sea View-South Coast swap of four teams that occurs every two years in the 10-school Coast View League. The transfer of Dawit Wilson, an all-league second-team quarterback last season, to Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Montebello was a slice of bad news for El Toro during the offseason. But the other Sea View coaches still consider the Chargers to be the league favorite. Mayoral figures that the offensive line will be an El Toro strength, so this team will run the ball a great deal of the time. That will help keep the offenses of the other Sea View League teams off the field, a good move because this league has some good offenses.

Bottom line: El Toro had one of the more-potent offenses in O.C. football history a few years ago. With the departure of Wilson, the Chargers might be more run-oriented than usual, which could work out fine with its solid offensive line. If the youngsters on defense contribute, their chances of winning the league title will grow.

Players to watch: AJ Aguilar, LB, Sr.; Marcus Blevins, RB, Sr.; Shane McLauglin, WR, Jr.; Tyler Romo, LB, Sr.
