OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:

ESPERANZA AZTECS

Coach: Tommy Storing

Last season: 2-8 overall, 0-3 league

Scouting report: Tommy Storing started the month as Esperanza’s defensive coordinator and ends it as the team’s head coach after the sudden resignation of Kevin Oberlander. The young coach inherits a squad that lost a number of bodies to graduation. With a youth movement taking shape, the Aztecs will start sophomore Treyden Buzzone under center after the youngster started at the tail end of 2015 as a freshman. And that seems to be the trend throughout the roster. Other than defensive end Trevor Barkley and safety Jake McPherson, most starters will be new.

Bottom line: With little to no varsity experience pretty much everywhere on the roster, Esperanza and Storing are in a tough spot headed into the season. With Brea remaining the class of the league and El Modena and El Dorado duking it out for second, Esperanza has work to do to catch up.

Players to watch: Trevor Barkley, TE/DT, Jr.; Treyden Buzzone, QB, So.; Jake McPherson, RB/CB, Sr.; Davonte Vendange, RB/LB, Sr.
