OCVarsity’s top players to watch this season:
TOP 5 PLAYERS
Alyaa Abdulghany, Corona del Mar, Sr.: The reigning CIF State champion posted one of the lowest scores ever carded on a par-36 course, shotting an 8-under 28 at El Niguel Country Club in the Sea Kings’ season-opening victory against Aliso Niguel. Later this month, she will represent the United States at the Junior Ryder Cup in Edina, Minn.
Yuki Yoshihara, Woodbridge, So.: She qualified for the CIF State Championship last season after shooting a 1-over-par 72 at Goose Creek Golf Course during the WSCGA Southern Regional. In June, she finished second at the AJGA Junior All-Star, one of her two top-five finishes in the AJGA during the summer.
Beth Lillie, Troy, Sr.: She finished fourth in two of her last six AJGA starts. Her scoring average during that span was a 78.1, and her lowest round came during the AJGA / CJGT Junior when she posted a 2-under-par 69 at Yorba Linda Country Club.
Chayse Gomez, Rosary, So.: She was the medalist of the Rosary Shotgun with an even-par 35 on the front nine at Western Hills Country Club. She finished third at the AJGA / CJGT Junior at Yorba Linda Linda Country Club in July by shooting 73, 70 and 71 in the 54-hole tournament.
Samantha Cabunag, University, Jr.: She has become one of the Trojans’ most consistent golfers. She qualified for the CIF-SS Individual Championship each of the past two seasons. Last week, she fired an even-par 35 at Aliso Viejo Country Club to help the Trojans finish 1-over-par as a team in a 176-204 victory against Aliso Niguel.
