OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
CORONA DEL MAR SEA KINGS
Coach: Dan O’Shea
Last season: 9-3 overall, 5-0 league
Scouting report: The Sea Kings look primed to defend their league title and contend in Division 4 of the CIF-SS playoffs. They are led by returning quarterback Chase Garbers, arguably the best offensive line in Orange County and plenty of talent at the skill positions. “We have the opportunity to be a pretty good football team,” Coach Dan O’Shea said. Garbers, a Cal commit who nearly made the finals of the Elite 11 during the summer, completed almost 70 percent of his passes last season for 2,715 yards and 33 touchdowns. He returns four of his top six receivers, a strong offensive line and two-way standout Jaydin Moses. Moses rushed for 1,008 yards last season. Rising junior Tae Le leads the receivers while tackle Colston Chacon, a transfer from Troy, joins the offensive line.
Bottom line: With an explosive offense in place, the Sea Kings’ main focus will likely be on defense. Look for Connor Reid and Bryan Samudro to help the defensive line. The emergence of middle linebacker Mickey Quinn and corner Fabian Montes also will be key factors. Former defensive assistant Brian Pearsall is now the defensive coordinator. If Corona del Mar’s defense plays well, the Sea Kings could be tough to beat.
Players to watch: Chase Garbers, QB, Sr.; Jaydin Moses, RB/LB, Sr.; Arwin Rahmatpanah, C, Sr., Bryan Samudro, OL/DL, Sr.; Tae Le, WR, Jr.
