Playoffs for local high school basketball are underway this week, with 13 teams from the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area in action.

League play concluded last week and championships decided. Here’s a league-by-league roundup for local teams.

EMPIRE LEAGUE: Western finished third in the EL for boys with an 8-4 mark, behind Tustin and Cypress. Pacifica’s boys were fifth at 4-8. On the girls’ side, the Mariners finished fourth with a 5-6 record. Western was sixth at 3-9.

EXPRESS LEAGUE: Among boys’ teams, Crystal Cathedral finished last, winning just one of seven games. On the girls’ side, Orangewood Academy was the league champ with a 10-0 mark; Crystal Cathedral tied for last at 0-7.

GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE: For boys; Rancho Alamitos won the GGL title, posting a 10-0 mark. Garden Grove (8-2) was second. Santiago and Los Amigos tied for third, with the Cavaliers winning a playoff for the playoff spot.

On the girls’ side, Los Amigos won the crown at 9-0, with Rancho Alamitos second (8-2) and Santiago (5-3) third.

GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE: Westminster (7-3) took second in the GWL behind champion Ocean View in the boys’ race. Orange finished last (0-9). Among girls’ Westminster (9-1) tied with Segerstrom for the title. Orange tied for fourth at 4-7.

ORANGE LEAGUE: Magnolia (3-4) took third among boys, and fifth (3-7) among girls.

OTHER LEAGUES AND TEAMS: Padre Pio of Garden Grove, playing a free-lance schedule, posted an 18-6 record in boys’ competition. In the San Joaquin League, Orangewood finished fourth (3-7) in boys’ play.

The CIF playoffs began Wednesday night (result too late for our deadline).

In boys’ 3AAA action, Santiago visited Citrus Valley, while Magnolia was at Pasadena.

3A play saw Rancho Alamitos hosting El Modena and Pacifica hosted Northwood.

In 6A action, Orangewood Academy visited Lake Arrowhead.

Scheduled for Friday are these 2A boys’ contests: Tesoro at Western, Peninsula at Garden Grove and Western at Colony (Ontario).

On the girls’ side, 3AA action will start tonight (Thursday) with Pacifica at Palm Desert and Diamond Ranch at Rancho Alamitos. On Saturday, Westminster will host La Quinta (Desert Valley) in 2AA play. In 3AAA action, Los Amigos will host Glendale.
