    Wrestling: Santa Ana's Scott Glabb among Hall of Fame inductees

    Santa Ana HS wrestling coach Scott Glabb will be one of the 10 inductees to the California Chapter of the National Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place May 17 at the Laguna Hillls Community Center (25555 Alicia Parkway).

    There are others with county ties: James Warren (coached at Estancia HS, 1967-1985); Robert Combs (coached at CS Fullerton, 1972-74); Bob Stolo (assistant at El Dorado for 20 years); John Owens (coached at San Clemente, 1975-91)

    The remainder of the class: Walter Fairley Jr.; Bill Henderson; Terrance Kerr; Dale Siscon and Ralph Valle

    Wrestling: Fountain Valley's Bryant Vasquez signs

    Bryant Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) signed with Western State Colorado. Vasquez qualified for the CIF State Tournament this season. He was a CIF champion. He is also a two-time Sunset League champion.

    The Mountaineers are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions and ranked in the top 10 in the nation among Division II wrestling programs.

    Vasquez, who earned second-team all-county honors this season at 220 pounds, will wrestle at 197 next year.

    Wrestling: Johnny Beltran earns All-American status

    Servite's Johnny Beltran placed fourth at 182 pounds at Senior Nationals in the National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, becoming the program's first ever All-American.

    Beltran advanced to the semifinals Saturday, winning his first four matches. He suffered a 4-2 defeat to Luis Peguero of Florida in the semifnals. He made his way to the third-place match, where he lost by fall (5.26) to Mark Tracy of New York.

    Team California finished in second place, just two points behind New York (238.5-236.5).

    There were 618 wrestlers in the Senior Division, 374 were state champions.

    By finishing in the top eight, wrestlers are recognized as a High School All-American.

    Wrestling: County wrestlers headed to Nationals

    El Dorado's Gino Roman (145), Servite's Johnny Beltran (182), Villa Park's Josh Rus (195) and Santa Margarita's Jeff Holsinger are scheduled to participate in the National High School Wrestling Championships, Senior Division.

    Minh Nguyen (Westminster, 113), Gil Gutierrez (Calvary Chapel, 138), Ben Madrid (Fountain Valley, 195) and Andrew Morgan (Fountain Valley, 152) are scheduled for the Junior Division.

    Loren Gomez (Fountain Valley, 106) is in the Freshman Division.

    Johnny Knowles (Calvary Chapel, 138), Blake Vasquez (Fountiain Valley, 152) are in the Sophomore Division.

    The tournament begins Friday in Virginia Beach.

    Wrestling: El Modena to induct Servite's Alan Clinton

    Servite wrestling coach Alan Clinton will be inducted into the El Modena High Hall of Fame, Saturday afternoon.

    The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the gym at El Modena, followed by the El Modena-Servite varsity wrestling dual at 2 p.m.

    Tickets are $5 at the door and $1 for students. There will be a silent auction and raffle. Afterward, an informal social hour will take place at Moreno’s Restaurant (4328 E. Chapman Ave.) in Orange.

    Clinton coached at El Modena for 21 years. He moved to Servite to start the wrestling program in 2006.

    Wrestling: The streak continues for Santa Ana

    The Santa Ana wrestling team defeated Ocean View (40-14) and Orange (78-6) in a pair of Golden West League duals Wednesday night to clinch league title.

    It is the 22nd consecutive league title for the Saints. Since 1993, Santa Ana has a 104-0 record in league duals.

    Wrestling: Calvary Chapel is ready to roll

    Monday, January 6 was a big day for the Calvary Chapel wrestling team.

    That was the day that summer transfers, Michael Rangel, Josh Sowma and Edgar Medina,  became eligible giving the Church Boyz an impressive lineup that is certainly one to watch as the season progresses toward the CIF State tournament.

    The new-look lineup was on display this weekend in Morro Bay and the initial reports are impressive.

    Calvary Chapel had 11 medalists, including five champions, en route to scoring 297 points to win the title. 

    Rangel (106) advanced to the finals, before losing to Zander Silva of Alta Loma, 4-2.
