    Girls wrestling: Tustin's Cordero wins title

    Tustin’s Jasmine Cordero won the 143-pound weight class at the fourth annual Lady Warrior Classic at Bishop Amat High, Saturday. Cordero won her semifinal and final matches by fall.

    Aliso Niguel’s Jaylinn Vega (111) and Kennedy’s Miyuki Pugrad (131) were finalists at their weights, eventually finishing second.

    Magnolia had three medalists. Gabriela Martinez (235) and Janeet Garcilazo (189) were third at their respective weights and Arlene Hernandez finished fifth at 160 pounds.

    Godinez’s Diana Hernandez placed fifth at 121 pounds.

    Wrestling: Fountain Valley places 3 at Zinkin

    Fountain Valley’s Andrew Morgan finished second at 170 pounds at the Zinkin Classic at Buchanan HS in Clovis.

    Morgan lost to Dominic Kincaid of Clovis, 7-3 in the finals.

    Morgan had three victories by fall and another by major decision to advance to the finals.

    Blake Vasquez finished sixth at 160 pounds for the Barons and Ben Madrid was fourth at 195 pounds.

    Wrestling: Servite has strong first day at CW Shootout

    Servite finished the first day of the Clovis West Shootout with 10 wrestlers in the semifinals and three in the consolation bracket.

    The Friars are tied with Clovis West in the standings.

    Liam Cronin (106), Matt Rodriguez (113), Brent Reed (120), Noah Blakley (132), Troy Madrigal (138), JJ Reed (145), Gordon Livermore (170), Matt Vasquez (182), Kyle Patterson (220) and VJ Leuta (285) are in the semifinals for the Friars.

    Johnny Knowles (138), Morris Wilner (160) and Jacob Collins (170) are in the semifinals at their weights for Calvary Chapel.

    Andrew Morgan (182) and Ben Madrid (195) are in the semifinals for Fountain Valley.

    Wrestling: Capistrano Valley hosting Fall clinic

    The Capistrano Valley wrestling program will be hosting a clinic, Oct. 17-19, with youth and club coach Mike Krause of Next Level and Shamrock Wrestling Club, from Michigan.

    The clinic is open to all grades, K-12. Space is limited to the first 75 to register.

    Each individual session is $35. All five sessions will cost $100. The amount will increase after Oct. 10.

    Series of Legends wrestling clinics coming to SoCal

    Series of Legends Wrestling Clinics will kick off Sunday at Trabuco Hills High with four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake.

    NCAA national champion Anthony Robles is next up, Oct. 12 also at Trabuco Hills High.

    Four-time NCAA finalist David Taylor (Penn State) will be up, Nov. 9 and Olympic Gold Medalist Jake Varner will be up Dec. 7.

    In all there will be 12 clinics over a 12-month period.

    Wrestling: Coaching changes in the Century League

    Scott Lawson resigned from Canyon to take the job at Villa Park. Lawson was also the Athletic and Activities Director at Canyon.

    Replacing Lawson at Canyon is Rich O’Connor.

    O’Connor graduated from Canyon in 1996 and was an assistant the past eight years. Former Canyon coach Harris Oishi and alumni Mike Gayer and Jaime Nunez will join O’Connor’s staff.

    Wrestling: Locals earn medals at Freestyle/Greco Roman State

    Andrew Morgan (Fountain Valley) was third at 182, Michael Vasquez (Servite) was fifth at 182, Liam Cronin (Servite) was fifth at 106 and Beckman's Anthony Anderson finished fourth at 170 at the Freestyle/Greco Roman State Finals.

    Wrestling: Santa Ana's Scott Glabb among Hall of Fame inductees

    Santa Ana HS wrestling coach Scott Glabb will be one of the 10 inductees to the California Chapter of the National Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place May 17 at the Laguna Hillls Community Center (25555 Alicia Parkway).

    There are others with county ties: James Warren (coached at Estancia HS, 1967-1985); Robert Combs (coached at CS Fullerton, 1972-74); Bob Stolo (assistant at El Dorado for 20 years); John Owens (coached at San Clemente, 1975-91)

    The remainder of the class: Walter Fairley Jr.; Bill Henderson; Terrance Kerr; Dale Siscon and Ralph Valle

    Wrestling: Fountain Valley's Bryant Vasquez signs

    Bryant Vasquez (Fountain Valley HS) signed with Western State Colorado. Vasquez qualified for the CIF State Tournament this season. He was a CIF champion. He is also a two-time Sunset League champion.

    The Mountaineers are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions and ranked in the top 10 in the nation among Division II wrestling programs.

    Vasquez, who earned second-team all-county honors this season at 220 pounds, will wrestle at 197 next year.
