    Wrestling: Jaime Flores steps down at Western

    Western wrestling coach Jaime Flores confirmed that he’s stepping down as coach after 13 years.

    Flores, who will remain on campus as teacher, said the decision was made so he can spend more time with his children (ages 4, 5 and 8).

    “It was a hard decision,” he said.

    Flores helped turn Western into one of the more respectable programs in the county. He said his first team (2002-03 season) had 14 kids.

    The Pioneers will be returning a strong nucleus from last year’s team. Western will have nine returning varsity wrestlers from the team that the Empire League title and a pair of CIF medalists.

    Wrestling: Coaching change at Villa Park

    Scott Lawson is stepping down as wrestling coach at Villa Park, he confirmed this week.

    Lawson will be replaced by Aaron Cross, who was on the Spartans’ staff and was the 2011-12 Orange County Register wrestling coach of the year.

    Lawson underwent surgery in October to have two discs replaced in his neck. He was scheduled for more surgery.

    “I probably came back sooner than I should have,” Lawson said. “My body is feeling it. It is time to pass things along to a new generation.”

    Lawson said he will remain at Villa Park as a teacher and believes the program will be in good hands with Cross.

    Wrestling: CIF State tournament to remain in Bakersfield through 2020

    It was announced Saturday night before the start of the CIF Wrestling Tournament at Rabobank Arena that the tournament will remain in Bakersfield through 2020 thanks to a new five-year agreement.

    The tournament has been in Bakersfield since 2004. There was a strong buzz circulating that this year would be the last in Bakersfield, with Ontario being a possible destination.

    According to the release: Official site visitations have concluded and the CIF Executive Committee will vote, March 26, to affirm the recommendation to extend the agreement with Bakersfield.

    "CIF and our almost 800,000 student-athletes are grateful to the city of Bakersfield, its community and Rabobank Arena for their commitment,” CIF Executive Director Roger L. Blake said in a statement. “We are proud to continue to call Bakersfield the home of the CIF Boys Wrestling State Championships.”

    Next year's tournament will run March 4-5, 2016.

    Wrestling: Pair of familiar names back on the mats

    Gil Gutierrez (138) is back at Santa Ana and finished second at Golden West League finals. Late last month, Michael Rangel (120) enrolled at Buena Park. Rangel won the Freeway League title Saturday.

    Rangel earned second-team all-county honors as a sophomore at La Habra. He was first team last year at Calvary Chapel. He's a three-time state qualifier.

    Gutierrez was third team as a sophomore.

    Wrestling: O.C. All-Star Classic set for Monday

    The annual O.C. All-Star Classic is set for Monday night at Marina High at 6 p.m.

    The event is designed to have the county’s top two wrestlers at each weight class face off, however, there will be changes. The matches count toward a wrestler’s 40-match season limit. Wrestlers must be in attendance by 5 p.m. General admission is $5.

    Here is the projected lineup:

    106 – No. 1 Liam Cronin (Servite) vs. No. 4 Adrian Curiel (Buena Park)

    113 – No. 1 Jacob Gunter (Esperanza) vs. No. 2 Ryan Gutierrez (Brea Olinda)

    Wrestling: Calvary Chapel stands strong with six

    Calvary Chapel placed third at the Black Watch Invitational at Upland High Tuesday. The Church Boyz had six medalists.

    Elijah Palacio (106), Christian Claudio (132) and Johnny Knowles (145) won their respective weight classes.

    Jacob Collins (170) and Morris Wilner (160) were second at their weights.

    Gabe Collins was seventh at 152 pounds.

    The tournament began Monday.
