Willy Puga resigned today as head football coach at Garden Grove.
Puga coached the Argonauts for four years, having been promoted from offensive coordinator before the 2010 season. Garden Grove played in CIF championship games in three of Puga's four seasons and won Garden Grove League titles in three of his four years.
He said he is resigning because of frustration with what he called lack of district support for the Garden Grove football program.
"With only four coaching stipends alotted to varsity and only two to JV, it's hard to maintain the program at the level I want to maintain it at," Puga said today. "It's fair in comparison to our league, but we're not just competing in league anymore. We're competing outside of league now."
Puga, 41, said he is considering pursuing head coaching or offensive coordinator positions for the 2014 season. He has been a walk-on coach at Garden Grove; a walk-on coach is a coach who is not a fulltime faculty or staff member at a school.Read the rest of this entry »
