    Boys tennis: University, Corona del Mar advance in regionals

    Neither University nor Corona del Mar had much trouble with their opening-round matches of the CIF USTA Southern Regional Boys Tennis Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Both won, 7-0, in the four-singles, three-doubles format.

    Some highlights: Against Rancho Bernardo, University's Drew Dawson won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1, while the No. 3 doubles team of Arseni Yalouskikh and Billy Lee won, 6-2, 6-0. Five miles down the road, where Corona del Mar hosted El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, Ryan Andrews won, 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 2 doubles unit of Andrew Nguyen and Paul Kacik came out on top, 6-1, 6-0.

    The Trojans advance to play Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, while the Sea Kings play La Jolla of San Diego. The winners will play each other. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Friday at The Claremont Club.

    Softball: My Spidey senes are tingling

    Harvard-bound Cindy Okamoto moves you to third with a ground out.

    Can YL manufacture a run right here? No. Lauren Brooks pops out to SS Paulina Anasis to end the inning.

    Jezz Portillo, who has been hot for Canyon lately, leads off the bottom of the triple with a triple to the gap in right-center field. A lot of coaches would have held the runner at second and settled for a double, but Canyon coach Dan hay likes his base runners to be aggressive and he was sending her the whole way.

    Softball: OLu applying pressure; summer blockbuster guide

    Orange Lutheran is back to applying the pressure.

    San Diego-bound Olivia Sandusky leads off the top of the fifth with a single for the Lancers.

    Samantha Arents sacrifices her to second.

    Mater Dei shortstop Nikki Udria makes an over-the-shoulder catch on a pop up by Mackenzie Boesel. Udria has ridiculous defense. Two down.

    Utah State-bound Devin Montgomery beats out an infield single and Sandusky scores from second with some heads-up base running. That makes it 4-2.

    Softball: Vikings threatening

    Top of the order coming up for Edison in the top of the third.

    Cal State Northridge-bound Carissa Sherman collects her second hit of the game with a blooper down the right-field line.

    Notre Dame-bound Ali Wester grounds out to short. Sherman was going on the pitch and ends up at second base.

    Notre Dame-bound Karley Wester slices one to left field ... DENIED!! Marina left fielder Sydnee Cable makes a shoe-string catch. Two down.

    Idaho State-bound Reis Birkett hits one off the third baseman's glove, but shortstop Sydney McCollum picks up the ricochet for a 5-6-3 play to end the inning.

    Softball: Winegarner in dugout with Pacifica

    Pacifica pitcher Kaley Winegarner is back on crutches from the emergency room where she had her left knee checked out and she's in the dugout to support her team.

    "I'm not going to miss my teammates in the finals," said Winegarner, who said the doctor told her it was sprained and she should be back in two weeks. Winegarner said she will go in for an MRI next week.

    North Carolina-commit Kaylee Carlson is starting for the Mariners and she retired the Mustangs in order in the top of the first.

    Nicole DeWitt singled to left to lead off the bottom of the first. Brooke Marquez hits a line drive off Yorba Linda ace Paige von Sprecken and Pacifica has runners on first and second with no outs.

    Bret Denio, aka the Human Softball Encyclopedia, is sounding very professional as the announcer.

    Golf: Los Al's Lee finishes second in Heather Farr

    Krystal Kuihuis (Tucson, Ariz.) fired a 2-under-par 69 in the final round of the Heather Farr Classic on Sunday and then beat Los Alamitos senior Esther Lee in a three-hole playoff to win the girls division at the 54-hole AJGA tournament at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

    Lee posted a 1-under 70 on Sunday and finished the tournament with a 5-under 208 after shooting a 69 in both the second and third rounds.

    Fountain Valley sophomore Lilia Vu finished in a tie for third, three shots behind the leaders after carding a final-round 69.

    Danny Ochoa shot a 5-under 66 on Sunday to win the boys division with an 8-under 205. Sunny Hills freshman Justin Kim fired a 71 in the final round to finish in fourth, five shots behind.

    Valencia freshman Derek Castillo shot a 2-over-par 73 on Sunday and finished tied for fifth in the boys division with a 2-under-par 211. He posted a 69 in both the first and second rounds and was never placed outside the top five during the tournament.

    Coaches: South All-Star Team Nominations

    It is time for the county's football coaches to nominate graduating senior players for the Orange County North-South All-Star Game, which is June 28 at Orange Coast College and again will be organized and managed by the Brea Lions.

    The new border for the North-South game is Warner Ave. Schools north of Warner Ave. are North schools; schools south of Warner Ave. are South schools

    Nominate players you are certain are worthy of consideration, and who will be able to play in the game and will want to play in the game.

    Shot of the week!

    It's not a high school game. It's an NJB game at Los Alamitos High School this past Sunday. Here is 7-year-old Adam Jaffe making an outside shot -- after the defender knocked Jaffe's headband over his eyes! Call it "blind luck" if you like. We figure Adam already has that sixth sense about where the basket is. Proud dad Brent Jaffe sent us the link to the following, and you have to watch the entire 40 seconds to really appreciate it ...
