Football notes: Huntington Beach rolling at right time

November 20th, 2013, 11:57 am by By ANTONIO MORALES

In a pregame huddle right before Huntington Beach's game against Fountain Valley, Oilers players were telling each other that they weren't a last-place team.

Huntington Beach had just come off a 42-point loss to Edison and was facing a 5-1 Fountain Valley team.

The Oilers played sloppily and fell into a last place tie in the Sunset League with Marina in a 19-14 loss to the Barons. Huntington Beach coach Eric Lo called it the low point of the season.

Since that point that last-place team has turned into a well-run outfit as the Oilers (6-5) have gone 3-1 in the past four games.

The past two victories have come in dominating fashion. Huntington Beach throttled Newport Harbor, 40-14, in the last week of the regular season. The triumph essentially put the Oilers in the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs.

Football notes: Buena Park aims for playoff breakthrough

November 14th, 2013, 2:27 pm by ANTONIO MORALES

It's been awhile since Buena Park has enjoyed the experience of a posteason conquest. The last time the Coyotes won a playoff game -- a 29-17 victory against South Hills of West Covina in 2001 -- most of the Buena Park players were around 6 years old or younger.

Those children have grown into teenagers and now have the chance to end the Coyotes' playoff dry spell. And Buena Park will try to put a stop to that drought against Villa Park at 7 p.m. on Friday night at El Modena.

The Spartans (8-2) made the CIF-SS Southwest Division finals last season, before falling in the championship game to Edison.

The Coyotes (8-2) missed the playoffs last season, so postseason experience will be on the side of Villa Park.

"We just have to keep doing what we've been doing all year," Buena Park coach Anthony White said. "The intensity will pick up, the play has to pick up, the coaching has to pick up, so we need to control our emotions and play Buena Park football."

Where, when: Tustin High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: This is the 50th all-time meeting in the series between the two Tustin Unified schools, and the winner gets a berth in the finals at Angel Stadium. The teams share Tustin High as their home field.

Foothill won the coin flip and will be the home team. This is the fourth playoff meeting between the teams. Tustin has won all three (1997-98 and 2000). Overall, Tustin has won the past three games in the series, including a 27-14 victory in the first game of the year, Sept. 2. Manning needs 88 yards to break Matt Barkley's county season-high of 3,560 passing yards. The Highlanders have won their past seven games. Aaron Porter has topped the 100-yard mark in three of his past four games, including 138 yards on 14 carries in the second round victory over Brea Olinda.
