Football: After last-minute win to get in, Loara focuses on making noise in playoffs

November 12th, 2013, 2:52 pm by By MARK COOPER

Loara coach Dean Lappin had a hunch his team’s upset victory last Friday would earn the Saxons an at-large berth into the Southern Division playoffs.

“Just assume we’re in,” Lappin and the coaching staff told his players after they defeated Golden West League champion Westminster in a 38-35 thriller.

He told the team to prepare to practice on Monday unless they hear otherwise.

Loara was given an at-large bid on Saturday — and a matchup with mighty Corona del Mar, the defending division champion and top seed this year. Lappin said he knew the Saxons (6-4, 3-2) would face either Corona del Mar or second-seeded Garden Grove if it got in the draw.

“When you’re the last one invited to the dance, you can’t be choosy about who you’re with,” Lappin said.

Football: Defense is the key for Garden Grove

October 28th, 2013, 4:16 pm by By ANTONIO MORALES

On Sept. 26, Garden Grove raced out to a touchdown advantage early in its nonleague game against Katella.

The Knights responded with a a 30-yard Miguel Galindo field goal. That was the last time Katella or anybody else has scored on the Argonauts' defense, a string of 19 consecutive scoreless quarters and four straight shutouts.

The stingy defense has pushed Garden Grove to an 8-0 record overall with a 3-0 record in the Garden Grove League, where the Argounauts sit atop the standings.

The latest domination by the Argonauts was a 49-0 triumph against second-place Los Amigos. The closest margin of victory in the shutout streak was 42 points, which means a lot of non-starters have helped the keep the scoreless run alive.

"The backups and third-string guys are taking pride in making sure they tackle and run to the football," Garden Grove coach Willy Puga said. "We're substituting pretty quick on defense, so it's a lot of backups in the third and fourth quarter.
