Former Los Alamitos standout and current Griffins assistant coach Scott Davidson scored twice but the U.S. men's water polo team opened the UANA World Aquatic Championship Qualification Tournament in Calgary with a disappointing, 10-6, loss to Canada on Wednesday.

The game marked the debut of U.S. interim head coach Jovan Vavic, the USC men's and women's coach. Captain Jeff Powers and Ryan Bailey - both UC Irvine products and silver medalists from 2008, each scored once.

The Americans need a top-two finish in the tournament to qualify for July's World Championships in Barcelona. There are only two other men's teams: Argentina and Brazil.
