Santa Margarita’s boys basketball team won last week’s Beach Bash tournament.

The Eagles defeated Leuzinger of Lawndale 68-57 in the tournament championship game Saturday at Corona del Mar High. The Eagles also defeated Trabuco Hills, Costa Mesa and Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the tournament.

The Eagles are 7-1 overall.

Trabuco Hills defeated Compton 52-43 in the third-place game. Corona del Mar defeated Edison 46-42 in the fifth-place game.

Jake Kyman of Santa Margarita was tournament MVP. Other Orange County players on the all-tournament team were Chase Anderson of Trabuco Hills, Isaiah Lee of Westminster, Jabari Steward of Costa Mesa, Josh Phillips of Edison, Kevin Kobrine of Corona del Mar, Nico Dasca of Costa Mesa, Quentin Watts of Trabuco Hills and Ryan Evans of Santa Margarita.

MORE TOURNAMENTS BEGIN

The North Orange County Championships began Monday. It is an 18-team tournament.

Among the teams in it are Aliso Niguel, Canyon, Capistrano Valley, Crean Lutheran, Los Alamitos, Saddleback Valley Christian, Servite and host school Sonora.

The tournament has pool-play games through Thursday. The championship game is at Sonora on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The Gary Raya SoCal Elite tournament begins Tuesday, with games at Beckman, Irvine, Tustin and Woodbridge. Among the 16 teams in that bracketed tournament are Edison, Northwood, JSerra, Tesoro, Esperanza, San Clemente and University.

The Loara-Godinez Tournament begins Tuesday with pool-play games. Ocean View, Pacifica and Sunny Hills are in the eight-team field as are the host schools.

CIF-SS POLLS RELEASED

The CIF-Southern Section’s first divisional polls for boys basketball were released Monday.

Canyon is the only Orange County team ranked No. 1 in the 10 divisions. Mater Dei is No. 2, behind Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, in Division 1. Mater Dei lost to Bishop Montgomery in last season’s CIF-SS Open Division championship game and in the CIF Southern California Regionals Open Division final.

Laguna Beach is ranked No. 2 in Division 3-AA, and Tarbut V’Torah is No. 2 in 5-A.

OPEN DIVISION FIELD REDUCED

The CIF-SS announced that the Open Division of the boys basketball playoffs will be reduced to eight teams this season. The Open Division had been a 16-team competition in previous years.

The CIF-SS Open Division championship game will be at the Pyramid at Long Beach State on March 2. Other division finals will be held at Azusa Pacific University, Colony High of Ontario and Godinez High.
