Mission Viejo Nadadores coach Bill Rose, who has helped guide U.S. Olympians and national team members since he took the reins of the world-renowned swimming club in 1992, will retire in December of 2017, he said Wednesday.

Rose, 73, who was inducted into the American Swim Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, said he is in good health and reached the decision with his wife, Siga, who is retiring this summer as an age-group coach at the club.

“It’s probably best that I spend some quality time with my grandkids and my wife,” he said. “It’s been a great ride. But I’ve got to remind myself, it’s not over yet.”

Rose has coached Olympians such as Lisa Jacob, Chad Carvin, Larsen Jensen and Chloe Sutton, as well as standouts such as the late Fran Crippen, Tom Shields, Justin Mortimer, Ashley Twitchel, Katie McLaughlin and Grant Shoults.

Rose has also been a leading coach for open-water swimming.
