Mater Dei’s boys water polo team ended a controversial week with a victory.

Kaden Kaneko scored four goals and Warren Loth added three to lead no. 2 Mater Dei’s No. 2 to a 9-4 victory against visiting No. 3 Huntington Beach in the schools’ season opener Saturday.

Ian Minsterman added three assists for the Monarchs (1-0).

Earlier in the week, Mater Dei confirmed that Coach Milos Skaljac has been placed on paid administrative leave. News also surfaced that Monarchs attacker Cooper Haddad transferred to Huntington Beach.

Mater Dei opened a 6-2 advantage at halftime and led 7-3 going into the fourth period.

Goalie Garrett Bruening made 10 saves to lead the Mater Dei defense in a duel with Huntington Beach keeper Jacob Pyle, who made 12 saves.
