The Mater Dei boys basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with one thing in mind: making history.

On Saturday, the Monarchs did just that.

Mater Dei defeated Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, 71-61, in the CIF Open Division state championship game at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

In addition to winning its fourth consecutive state championship and 11th in school history, Mater Dei completed an undefeated season, finishing 35-0. It was Mater Dei’s first unbeaten season since 1985, when the Monarchs were 29-0.

Senior Stanley Johnson, who has been a key component in each of the past four state titles, played scored 25 points to lead all scorers.

M.J. Cage added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Juarez rounded out the double-digit scoring for Mater Dei with 11 points.
