There's nothing like the epic rivalry between Canyon and El Modena in Century League softball. This fight, err, game always has huge implications on the league title picture, rankings, bragging rights, playoff seedings and the safety of the known universe. OK, maybe, that last one is a bit much, but it's huge in the softball community.
In the first meeting, which was dubbed The Beatdown in O-Town, Canyon rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to deliver The People's Elbow on El Modena and defeat the Vanguards, 11-10.
The rematch is set for today at Canyon High in Anaheim Hills and I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up just outside the Canyon dugout. As is tradition, I have dubbed this game The Rumble in the Hills. The word on the streets was that Canyon coach Dan Hay might sing the National Anthem for Senior Day. Canyon players Lauren Young and Kelly Stowe heard Hay sings a mean "Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree." Hay squashes any rumors about singing the national anthem.
The El Modena players have yet to arrive at Canyon High. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m. because many of the girls on both teams have AP tests. A bunch of smart girls. I never had to worry about AP tests back in the day.Read the rest of this entry »
