The puck crosses the goal line and the red strobe light flashes, but could a better light be engineered to herald a score?

“Light the Lamp” was the theme of this year’s First Flight Field Trip on Tuesday, which invited some 16,000 elementary school children from 160 schools to the Honda Center for a day of hockey and education. Along with interacting with and watching Ducks players, the students got a history of the goal light and lessons on the design and engineering in their every day lives that make the system function.

Students received a workbook tied into the day’s lessons that would also help them build a table top hockey rink with working lights and sounds. The event is free for students.
