    Volleyball: Former O.C. stars help lead Stanford to NCAA title match

    The Stanford women’s volleyball team will face Texas, Saturday in the NCAA National Championship.

    The Cardinal is in search for its seventh national title and has been led by a strong county influence.

    Kathryn Plummer (Aliso Niguel HS) had 15 kills, 11 digs and five blocks in the semifinal victory over Minnesota. Kelsey Humphreys (Corona del Mar) had 17 digs in the victory.

    Hallland McKenna (Sage Hill) had an ace in the match. Defensive specialist Payton Chang (Mater Dei) is also on the roster.

    Girls volleyball: Four of county's top teams to compete in Durango Fall Classic

    The Durango Fall Classic grabs the spotlight this week as several county teams are competing in this year’s tournament.

    Third-ranked Edison, No. 4 Santa Margarita, sixth-ranked Los Alamitos and seventh-ranked El Dorado headline the county teams. Others competing include Beckman, San Clemente and Villa Park.

    Pool play begins Friday at 1 p.m.. Santa Margarita (pool 11) and Edison (pool 10) are the top-ranked teams in their pools.

    Qualifying rounds start at 8:30 a.m., Saturday.

    Assumption of Kentucky has won the last two titles. Santa Margarita finished second last year. No county team has won the Durango Fall Classic since Mater Dei in 2001.

    Girls volleyball: Huntington Beach prevails at Molten Classic

    Third-ranked Huntington Beach defeated Lakewood, 25-23, 15-25, 11-25, 26-24, 15-9 in the finals of the Molten Classic, Monday night at Lakewood HS.

    Julia Jackson led the Oilers with 18 kills and five blocks. Jilian Kim and Cami Sanchez had 12 and 11, respectively.

    Huntington Beach began the day defeating St. Joseph's (25-21, 25-13, 25-15) in the semifinals.

    Northwood defeated Calvary Chapel in a one-set playoff to win the Segerstrom Tournament. Northwood defeated Elizabeth and Whittier Christian to advance to the finals, Saturday.

    Girls volleyball: Santa Margarita finishes second in Hawaii

    The Santa Margarita girls volleyball team lost to Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the finals of the Ann Kang Invitational in Hawaii.

    The Eagles had defeated the Mustangs earlier in the tournament, but Mira Costa exacted a bit of revenge, winning 25-20, 25-21 in the final.

    Santa Margarita's Meghan McClure and Devon Chang were selected to the all-tournament team.

    Edison finished fourth in the tournament. Cassidy Dennison earned all-tournament honors.

    Sage Hill finished ninth. Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor ended up 11th and 14th, respectively. Sage Hill

    Volleyball: Erika Kobayashi steps down at Savanna

    Savanna volleyball coach Erika Kobayashi is stepping down as coach after four years. Kobayashi is expecting the birth of her second child in October.

    Kobayashi was also the boys coach.

    Richard Chew, who has previously coached at Oxford Academy and Western, will replace Kobayashi as girls coach.

    As girls coach, Kobayashi led Savanna to a 22-18 Orange League record and 42-46 overall, with three consecutive CIF appearances and lead the Rebels to the quarterfinals.

    On the boys side, Kobabayshi led the program to a 35-47 overall record and 19-20 in league. Before taking over, the program had an overall record of 12-43 and 5-25 in league.

    Girls volleyball: Trinity-Sunset Showcase coming in September

    The first ever Trinity-Sunset League Girls Volleyball Showcase will take place Wednesday, Sept. 7.

    The event will take place at Orange Lutheran and Huntington Beach HS.

    At Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei v. Los Alamitos at 5 p.m. Orange Lutheran and Edison will follow at 7 p.m.

    At Huntington Beach HS, JSerra will face Newport Harbor at 5 p.m. The final match will feature Santa Margarita and Huntington Beach.

    Girls volleyball: Fountain Valley's Hinnant commits

    Fountain Valley junior Amy Hinnant recently committed to Azusa Pacific University. Hinnant, an opposite hitter, earned second team all-Sunset League honors last season.

    Amy is the younger sister of former Fountain Valley football player JD Hinnant, who is currently at Cal.

    Girls volleyball: CIF-SS playoffs schedule

    If there are any wild card matches, they will take place Saturday.
