    Girls volleyball: California Challenge begins in San Diego

    The ASICS California Challenge later this afternoon, hosted by Torrey Pines. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Matches will take place at Alliant University (10455 Pomerado Rd., San Diego, 92131). Tournament resumes Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.

    Girls volleyball: Matches of the week

    The final week of September brings us one step closer to the start of league play across the girls volleyball landscape. Some leagues will get under Thursday. Here is a list of matches that grab my attention this week:

    Start time for varsity matches vary, but if you're at the gym by 5:15, you should be in good shape.


    Tuesday, Sept. 29

    Laguna Beach at Newport Harbor - interesting nonleague match. Laguna Beach gets one final true test before the start of Orange Coast League play. The Sailors are coming off of a five-set loss to Orange Lutheran and every victory is important as they set their sights on the upcoming Sunset League race.

    Girls volleyball roundup: Corona del Mar rallies against San Clemente

    Jessie Harris had 17 kills to help the third-ranked Corona del Mar (10-1) to a five-set victory over eighth-ranked San Clemente.

    Kendal Kipp and Natalia Bruening had 13 and 12 kills, respectively in the 24-26, 25-20, 28-30, 25-16, 15-10 home victory.

    Alex Osterberg had six kills for CdM.

    In other action

    Woodbridge 3, Mission Viejo 1: Mima Mirkovic led the host Warriors with 18 kills in a 25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 25-13 home victory.

    Girls volleyball: Durango Fall Classic, first day update

    It was a satisfying first day at the Durango Fall Classic for both the Santa Margarita and Los Alamitos girls volleyball teams.

    The Eagles, the top-ranked team in the county, fresh off of winning the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament opened the two-day Las Vegas tournament with two-set sweeps of Pleasant Grove of Utah (25-22, 25-17), Bonneville of Idaho (25-21, 25-16) and Palo Verde of Las Vegas (25-5, 25-7).

    Los Alamitos, ranked fourth in the county, swept McQueen of Nevada (25-14, 25-20), Flintridge Sacred Heart (35-33, 25-21) and Arbor View of Nevada (25-13, 25-10)

    San Clemente (pool 5), Edison (pool 6) and Villa Park (pool 9) all finished second in their respective pools.

    Laguna Beach (pool 2), Beckman (pool 7) and Newport Harbor (pool 16) finished third and Edl Dorado was fourth in pool 12

    Girls volleyball: Durango Fall Classic begins Friday

    It is time for several county girls volleyball teams to try their luck in Las Vegas.

    The 64-team Durango Fall Classic begins Friday, with teams from Nevada, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Arizona, Kentucky, Utah and Idaho.

    Pool play begins Friday afternoon.

    Santa Margarita is top seed in pool 3. Laguna Beach (pool 2), San Clemente (pool 5), Edison (pool 6), Villa Park (pool 9) and Los Alamitos (pool 10) are all seeded second in their respective pools.

    Beckman (pool 7), El Dorado (pool 12) and Newport Harbor (pool 16 are third seeds in their pool.

    Girls volleyball: Santa Margarita wins Ann Kang tournament

    The Santa Margarita girls volleyball team put the finishing touches on a remarkable weekend, defeating Punahou, 22-25, 25-15, 15-12 in the finals of the annual Ann Kang Invitational preseason tournament.

    The Eagles lost just one match during the weekend.

    Santa Magarita becomes the first county team since Edison in 2011 to win the tournament.

    Other county teams to win the tournament include Los Alamitos (2005) and Newport Harbor (1998-99).

    Mater Dei defeated Redondo Union in the fifth-place match. Huntington Beach faced Clovis in the seventh-place match.

    Girls volleyball: New coach hired at St. Margaret's

    St. Margaret’s announced the hiring of Joaquin Acosta as the new girls volleyball coach.

    Acosta, played at BYU where he earned All-American honors and a national championship. Acosta also had an played internationally both indoor and on the beach.

    “Coach Acosta has a proven track record of success at every possible level of the sport. From coaching youth programs, to his time on the Puerto Rican National Team, Coach Acosta has amassed a level of experience not often found at the high school level,” St. Margaret’s Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber join our staff and look forward to having him share his tremendous knowledge of the game with our student-athletes.”

    The Tartans finished last season as runners-up in the CIF-SS Division 3AA playoffs.
