    Swim: Sonora's Ault focusing on Trials, questionable for season

    Sonora All-County swimmer Taylor Ault is taking home-schooling classes to focus more effort into preparing for this summer's U.S. Olympic Trials and is questionable to race this spring, Raiders swim coach Todd Jacobsen said in a text Wednesday.

    The coach said he is "not sure yet" if Ault will swim for Sonora this spring, adding that the junior has not attended classes at Sonora this academic year.

    Last spring, Ault captured the CIF-SS Division 2 title in the 200-yard freestyle in a meet-record 1 minute, 46.07 seconds and also won the 500 free in a sizzling 4:43.46.

    Ault also led off the 400 free relay with a swift 49.80.

    She swim club for La Mirada-based Armada. At the winter nationals in December, Ault clocked a 4:41.73 in the 500 free.

    Water polo recruiting: Foothill's Miller commits to Air Force

    Foothill All-County water polo attacker Mike Miller, who helped the Knights capture back-to-back CIF Division 2 titles, has committed to Air Force, the senior reports.

    Miller helped form Foothill's Big 3 with Bobby Lee and Chas Hornecker this past fall and netted the winning goal in double sudden-death overtime to beat Dana Hills in the Division 2 final.

    "It has been my dream to attend the Academy, play water polo and ultimately defend our country's freedom," Miller said in an e-mail.

    "Like many others who have stayed focused, played hard and excelled academically, I have water polo to thank for opening doors to my future."

    Miller netted 70 goals and added 63 steals last season.

    Swim flash: Corona del Mar's Merrell taking spring off to focus on Olympic Trials

    Rising Corona del Mar sophomore swimmer Eva Merrell, who challenged Katie McLaughlin in the 100-yard butterfly at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals in May and won the backstroke, has entered a home-schooling program to focus on next year's U.S. Olympic Trials and won't race for the Sea Kings this spring, her club coach confirmed.

    "This is what she wanted to do," Aquazot coach Todd Hickman said of Merrell.

    Merrell, 15, continued her rise at last month's winter nationals, where she clocked a time of 58.58 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly, which ranks her seventh in the nation this year.

    The time also ranks second all-time in the 15-16 age-group to the lengendary Mary Meagher's 57.93 from 1981.

    Kelsi Worrell (57.24) and McLaughlin (57.87) own the top-two U.S. times for the women's 100-meter butterfly for 2015, the buildup year for next summer's Olympic Trials.

    Swim: Newport Harbor's Peirsol to be inducted into International Hall of Fame

    Aaron Peirsol, the Orange County-bred swimmer who became arguably the greatest backstroker of his generation and a five-time Olympic gold medalist, will be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame on June 3-5 in Santa Clara, the organization announced.

    Peirsol rose from the Irvine Novaquatics club as an age-group star under Coach Dave Salo to become a three-time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008) who claimed five gold medals and two silvers.

    He quietly retired in 2011, making a meet in the summer of 2010 at his home pool, the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics, his final competition.

    Peirsol, who also raced for Newport Harbor High, retired on top at age 27.

    “I may be relatively young but I started young. I ended up being extremely content and I called a spade a spade," Peirsol said at his retirement.

    Aquatics: Marina's Lastelic, El Toro's Parenteau, Troy's Herrera commit

    The aquatics commitments continue to roll in.

    Marina distance ace Joseph Lastelic, left, has committed to UC Santa Barbara, Irvine Novaquatics club coach Jeri Marshburn announced via Twitter. The senior placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle at the Division 1 finals last season.

    El Toro water polo player Maddy Parenteau has committed to San Diego State, Chargers girls coach Justin Johnson reports. The senior racked up 69 goals, 44 assists and 63 steals last season to help the Chargers claim their first CIF title.

    Troy diver Cristian Herrera has committed to Notre Dame, he confirmed. He placed seventh at the CIF-SS Division 2 finals last season and third as a sophomore.

    Swim: Dana Hills distance standout Forker commits

    Dana Hills and Mission Viejo Nadadores freestyler Shane Forker has committed to Cal, Dolphins swim coach Matt Rosa reports.

    Forker finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle last season at the CIF Division 1 finals with a time of 4 minutes, 24.56 seconds.

    He also claimed fourth in the 200 free with a 1:38.70, helping Dana Hills finished second in the team competition to two-time champion University.

    The Nadadores' pipleline to Cal is becoming strong.

    Besides Katie McLaughlin on the women's side, the Nadadores' Nick Norman (Capo Valley) signed with Cal last season while ex-Nadadores Janardan Burns (Aliso Niguel) is now a junior standout for the Golden Bears. Recent University freestyler Ken Takahashi also is a Nadadores product and a fellow freshman with Norman at Cal.

    Swim: Corona del Mar's Hanson among three more Aquazot commitments

    A trio of Orange County high school swimmers from the Aquazot club have committed to four-year colleges, Aquazot coach Brian Pajer reports.

    The trio are: Tim Hanson of Corona del Mar (Michigan), Isis Choi of Woodbridge (Princeton) and Princess Ferguson-Nguyen of University (Kenyon College).

    Harvard-Westlake standout breaststroker Alex Hsing, a newcomer to the Aquazot, has committed to Penn.

    Hanson finished ninth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.56) last season at the CIF Division 1 finals. His brother, Justin Hanson, swims for another Big Ten school: Northwestern.

    Choi touched seventh in the 100 breaststroke at last season's Division 1 finals with a 1:05.29.

    Swim: Crean Lutheran's Jorgenson commits

    Standout sprint-freestyler Tianna Jorgenson of Crean Lutheran's defending CIF Division 2 girls swim team has committed to race and serve as an officer for Air Force, the senior reports.

    "I come from a military family so I've always had the idea of wanting to serve," she wrote in e-mail. "I can't wait to officially be part of the Falcon family when Cadet training starts in June 2016!"

    Jorgenson finished fifth in the 50-yard free (24.00) and tied for fourth in the 100 free (52.07) at last season's CIF Division 2 finals. She blazed faster at the state meet, clocking a 23.62 to place 10th in the 50 free.

    Jorgenson also helped Crean Lutheran set the national private school record in the 400 free relay at the state meet with a 3:20.03. One of her teammates from the relay, Emily Eastin, has committed to Michigan.

    Swim: Crean Lutheran's Kampfer commits

    Crean Lutheran swimmer Brittany Kampfer has committed to Duke, Saints coach Craig Brown reports.

    Kampfer, a recent transfer to Crean Lutheran from Mater Dei, finished second in the 500-yard freestyle last season at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals with a time of 4 minutes, 49.94 seconds.

    Kampfer touched a close-second to Woodbridge's Daniela Georges, now at Arizona.

    Crean Lutheran's Emily Eastin earlier committed to Michigan.
