Girls swim: Showdowns await at Foothill Swim Games

April 24th, 2015, 1:20 pm by BY DAN ALBANO

The girls navigate their prelims today at the Foothill Swim Games at 3 p.m., setting the stage for Saturday's 10 a.m. finals. Here are some of the matchups to watch:

In the 200-yard free, Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo Nadadores teammates Katie McLaughlin and Samantha Shelton could make this a "friendly rivals" finale on Saturday.

McLaughlin, the O.C.-record holder, leads the county this season (1:47.76) and is coming off a breakthrough long-course 200 free at the recent Arena Pro Swim in Mesa, Arizona.

The 200 IM offers excellent racers. There's county-record holder Ella Eastin of Crean along with super-consistent Nora Deleske of Edison and Foothill's Courtney Mykkanen. Also keep an eye out for Tesoro freshman Jessica Epps.

Crean Lutheran freshman Elise Garcia is the top-seed in the 50 with a 23.90 and her toughest opponent might be teammate, Tianna Jorgenson.

Boys swim: Foothill Swim Games primer led by Shoults watch

April 23rd, 2015, 11:39 am by BY DAN ALBANO

This week's Foothill Swim Games is shaping up as one of the best meets of the regular season. And one of the biggest reasons: the potential matchups in the finals Saturday.

Today's boys prelims at 3 p.m. will help set the stage for Saturday's 10 a.m. finals at Foothill.

Santa Margarita's Grant Shoults has entered the 500-yard free and 200 individual medley.

The junior leads the county in the IM with his early-season 1:48.33. Shoults is coming off a strong showing at the Arena Pro Swim in Mesa, Ariz. but could be challenged in the IM by surging Daniel Tran of University, who is ranked third in the county with a 1:51.24.

Shoults could again blaze in the IM but will be intriguing to watch in the 500. In December, he sizzled a 4:17.52 in a meet for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. Could he set his sights this weekend on Nick Norman's county-leading 4:23.76?

Boys swim: Northwood standout freshman dealing with CIF issues

April 22nd, 2015, 11:48 pm by BY DAN ALBANO

Northwood standout freshman swimmer Hunter Hitchens has not raced in recent weeks because of a CIF issue, Timberwolves coach Alex Nieto said Wednesday night.

Nieto said Hitchens is "going through CIF eligibility issues" and not racing to protect himself and third-ranked Northwood. Hitchens last raced April 1 against Irvine in a Pacific Coast League victory.

Nieto said Northwood has not forfeited any dual-meet victories.

Hitchens, a club swimmer with the Irvine Novaquatics, owns the sixth-ranked time for 14-year-olds in the nation this year with a 46.26 in the 100-yard free in April. He is seventh in the 200 free with 1:41.09.

Girls water polo: Two-time CIF champ Lammers to retire at SA Valley

April 22nd, 2015, 2:15 pm by BY DAN ALBANO

Veteran Santa Ana Valley girls water polo coach Fred Lammers, a former O.C. Register coach of the year who has spent nearly four decades at the school, will retire in June, he announced.

Lammers, 62, has spent 38 years at Santa Ana Valley as a biology teacher and aquatics coach. He has coached water polo and swimming at the school but is best known for leading the Falcons to consecutive CIF-SS Division 7 titles in 2011 and 2012.

The CIF titles highlighted an 18-year run as the girls water polo coach.

The '11 Falcons became the first girls team from Valley to capture a CIF title in any sport. Lammers was selected the The Register's girls coach of the year for 2011 and followed up by claiming another CIF title in 2012.

A pair of Santa Ana Valley alumni will take over the Falcons' water polo programs: Peter Sophabmixay (girls) and Ricky Carrillo (boys). Veteran assistant Eric Terwiliger will remain with the water polo programs.
