The technique was there, but the focus might have been lacking, so Monarchs coach Ollie Martin had Ashley Nguyen spend most of her time Monday on the practice green, standing over putts of different length putts with a variety of challenging breaks.
“We were getting her to go through the drills where you have to make every single putt, so that when you switch over to a match you can make it,” Martin said. “So I am happy to hear what she went out and did today.”
It only took 13 putts for Nguyen to get around the front nine on a breezy day at Western Hills Country Club, and she medaled for the third time this season, shooting a 4-over-par 39 for the Monarchs (7-0, 3-0) to lead Mater Dei to a 211-247 Trinity League victory against Rosary.
Nguyen came into the match ranked second on the team in scoring, averaging 38.2 for a nine-hole match, which is about three strokes better than what she did last season as a sophomore.
“ She has improved tremendously. She seems always to handle the pressure for us real well," Martin said. "This is really an encouraging sign for us. And the team looks really, really good this year. It is a team with potential, enough to win a CIF title I think.”Read the rest of this entry »
