February 13th, 2014, 7:13 am by By DAN ALBANO

Los Alamitos girls water polo coach Dave Carlson said Wednesday night that he will resign after this season but added that he will not apply for the Foothill post when it opens.

Foothill also will be seeking a coach after the mid-season resignation of Jeff Colton. Carlson coaches many of the Foothill players in club with SOCAL as an assistant with the 18-and-under girls.

When asked if he would apply for the Foothill position, Carlson answered simply, "No."

Carlson said he will remain a teacher at Los Alamitos and continue to coach club at SOCAL. Carlson is the head 18-and-under boys coach at SOCAL and an assistant with the 18-and-under girls.

Colton remains a math teacher at Foothill, the Tustin school district confirmed. Colton and school officials have declined to comment on the reason for his resignation.

Coach accepts heavy blame in lopsided water polo loss

November 20th, 2008, 2:24 am by DAN ALBANO,

Los Alamitos' Dave Carlson has earned several coaching honors over the years. And he has won CIF titles in boys and girls water polo and help develop a 2008 Olympian in Tim Hutten. But after his Griffins fell to El Toro, 11-4, in the Division I finals Wednesday night, Carlson wasn't happy with himself.

He accepted blame for the Griffins' lack of execution on offense and defense.

"This late in the season, that falls on the coach," he said. "I don't want to take anything away from them (El Toro). They played awesome and I didn't do a very good job."

Even in his bitter disappointment - this was supposed to be LosAl's year to at least make the Div. 1 final - Carlson showed why he is one of the very best coaches in the region. Win or lose, he and his players always seem to be class acts. Carlson has received a ton of accolades but Wednesday, he showed his purity as a competitor. He took his loss like a sportsman. But know this, Dave Carlson will be back.
