Crean Lutheran South’s football team has completed the first week of varsity competition.

The Saints lost to Calvary Chapel, 44-0, in a nonleague contest Saturday at Estancia High.

Now the Saints prepare for week two of the season, today on the road against the San Diego Jewish Academy.

But head coach Dave Krystowiak isn’t setting goals for the team in terms of wins and losses.

“I’m not a big wins and losses guy,” he said. “I don’t like to talk to my team about wins and losses, I just like to talk about effort and them being the best they can be and then usually, I find that when teams give everything they have and they believe in each other, then the wins and losses take care of themselves.

“Really, it’s about personal pride and giving effort. We’re excited, I wouldn’t have taken this job if I wasn’t excited about getting it going.”

Offense

Backs The quarterback will be senior David Calderwood (6-0, 175).

“He’s one of our most experienced players, he started as a freshman,” said Krystowiak. “He’s really helped a lot of the guys learn and that’s one of the greatest leadership qualities he has. He’s probably our best athlete out there so we want to get the ball in his hands as much as we can.

“We’re going to depend on him to be a leader and to be that athlete on the field.”

The running backs will be junior Matt Homan (6-0, 200), who will also be the back-up quarterback and sophomore Will Robinson (6-0, 150).

Freshmen Tom McMillian (5-8, 165) and Josh Bullock (5-9, 170) are the other backs.

Line “We have a handful of juniors on the line, guys who haven’t played a lot of football,” Krystowiak said.

Guard Luke Gibbons (6-2, 200) is going to be the key player on the line, Krystowiak said.

“He’s athletic and explosive who has a really big frame,” he said.

Rylan Beisner (6-1, 215) is scheduled to start at center. Eric Park (6-1, 200) and Vincent Park (6-9, 185), who are not related, will also see time on the line, Krystowiak said.

“They’re both disciplined and smart kids who do things right,” Krystowiak said.

The other tackle will be either junior Luke Bonefont (6-2, 200) or freshman James Moore (6-1, 195).

Receivers Freshmen Riley Tooker (5-10, 140) and Daniel Kuntz (5-11, 150), and sophomore Joe Atkinson (5-11, 140) are among the players scheduled to see time.

Defense

Backs Calderwood, also the quarterback, will be the free safety.

Tooker and Robinson will also be in the secondary.

“We’ll play with just three defensive backs,” Krystowiak said.

Linebackers Homan and Vincent Park are scheduled to start. Other players who could see time at linebacker include McMillian, Bullock and Ken Mitsumasu (5-7,155).

Line “We’re going to try and rotate heavily on our defensive line,” Krystowiak said.

Brandon Giemont (6-3, 215) will be one of the defensive ends, teaming up with Eric Park.

Gibbons and Beisner will be the tackles.

Moore, Bonefont, Michael Shafer (5-8, 140) and Alex Yoon (5-9, 190) will also see time on the line.

Special Teams

“The kicking battle is wide open,” Krystowiak said.

Tooker, Atkinson and Antonio Patricia (5-9, 135) could all handle the kicking duties, Krystowiak said. Calderwood will be the punter.
