    Corona del Mar football names new coach

    Corona del Mar has named defensive coordinator Dan O'Shea as its football coach, replacing Scott Meyer, athletic director Don Grable said in an e-mail Tuesday.

    O'Shea has served as the Sea Kings' defensive coordinator the past four seasons, leading one of the better units in Orange County. Corona has claimed three CIF-SS titles and a state crown during the stretch.

    In 2013, Corona del Mar finished 16-0 en route to the state Division III title, allowing  9.6 points per game.

    O'Shea was the defensive coordinator at Trabuco Hills prior to Corona del Mar. He also is the former head coach at St. Anthony in 2003-2004.

    He replaces Meyer, who departed after last season for Servite.

    Boys water polo: CdM's Spruth joins wave to Pepperdine

    Corona del Mar water polo player Garrett Spruth has committed to Pepperdine, Sea Kings boys coach Barry O'Dea confirmed.

    Spruth was a first-team all-Pacific Coast League selection who helped Corona del Mar reach the CIF Division 1 semifinals this past season.

    At Pepperdine, Spruth will join class of 2015 recruits Marko Asic (Dana Hills), Gavin Scott (Foothill) and Spencer Lupin (Santa Margarita).

    Boys basketball: Regionals today

    CIF Southern California Regionals, Second round (all games 6 p.m.)

    Division II: La Mirada (27-5) at Canyon (24-9). La Mirada lost to Compton in the CIF-Southern Section 2A semifinals. Canyon is 2AA champion. Including its 98-65 win over Kearny in the regionals first round Wednesday, Canyon has scored 201 points over its past two games. La Mirada beat Canyon, 61-56, in an Orange Holiday Classic semifinal in late December. The winner of this game plays the Compton-Hanford winner in the semifinals Tuesday.

    Division 3: Corona del Mar (25-7) at Damien of La Verne (25-5). Corona del Mar is on the road again in the regionals after winning at El Cajon Valley in the first round Wednesday, 46-33. CdM lost to Beverly Hills in the CIF-SS 3A final. Damien played in the Open Division: a first-round loss to Orange Lutheran; a consolation second-round win ove Alemany; a consolation semifinals loss to Redondo. Damien is No. 17 in the California top 20. The winner plays the Beverly Hills-Cantwell Sacred Heart winnner in the semifinals.

    Division 3: Sonora (29-4) at Alemany of Mission Hills (22-8). CIF-SS 3AA champion Sonora beat Valhalla by a lot, 101-74, in the regionals first round Wednesday. Alemany beat West Bakersfield 72-49. Alemany played in the CIF-SS Open Division. It lost to Centennial of Corona in the first round and to Damien in the consolation second round.The winner plays the Gahr-Cathedral winner in the semifinals.

    Division 6: Orangewood Academy (22-12) at Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth (22-4): Orangewood, CIF-SS Division 6 champion, won a regionals first-round home game against Caruthers, 68-63. Sierra Canyon, No. 6 in the state top 20, played in the Open Division of the CIF-SS playoffs. It beat St. John Bosco in the first round and lost to Etiwanda by five points in the second round. The winner plays the St. Benard-Viewpoint winner in the semifinals.

    Foothill Division championship game: Corona del Mar vs. Trabuco Hills, Saturday at 3 p.m. at Foothill High.

    Costa Mesa Division championship game: Hemet at Laguna Hills, Friday at 3 p.m.

    Orange County Division championship game: Whittier at Rancho Alamitos, Friday at 3 p.m.

    Girls water polo: Musselman withdraws from Corona del Mar

    Corona del Mar All-County water polo player Maddie Musselman has withdrawn from Corona del Mar to pursue making the U.S. Olympic team, Sea Kings athletic director Don Grable confirmed Friday night.

    Musselman, a junior, has enrolled in an on-line school, Grable said.

    "She'll always be a Sea Queen," Grable said at Corona del Mar's CIF boys basketball game at Azusa Pacific. "We're proud of her."

    Musselman helped Corona del Mar reach the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals this past season, though she has been an impact player since her freshman year.

    She also has played for the U.S. national team. Her strengths are defense, speed and passing while her offensive game continues to progress.
