Newport Harbor coach Eric Tweit guided his runners on a ferocious late-season tear that began in late October and didn’t end until they took the podium as the second-best Division II team in the state.

After finishing sixth at the county meet, the Sailors won the second Sea View League cluster meet, then league finals.

At the CIF-SS finals, Newport Harbor won the competitive DivisionII race by two points and earned a trip to the state meet.

“At the start of the year, we were just trying to get to the state meet, and all of a sudden we win CIF, and now we’re second here,” Tweit said as he held the state CIF award plaque.

“We exceeded what our goals were at the start of the year.”

Tweit, who has been cross country coach at Newport Harbor for 26 seasons, will return all his runners except Whitney Blue in 2006.
