The CIF State Federated Council on Friday approved a statewide rule that will allow freshmen to make a one-time, unrestricted transfer before the start of their sophomore year.

The transfers would be eligible without making a bonafide change of residence but would be governed by stronger bylaws against undue influence and moving for athletic reasons.

Currently in the Southern Section, transfers need to change residences or receive a hardship waiver to gain varsity eligible at another school.

The new state rules begin July 1.

A copy of the transfer rules approved Friday in San Jose will be available on the CIF State website – cifstate.org– later this month.
