    Volleyball: Erika Kobayashi steps down at Savanna

    Savanna volleyball coach Erika Kobayashi is stepping down as coach after four years. Kobayashi is expecting the birth of her second child in October.

    Kobayashi was also the boys coach.

    Richard Chew, who has previously coached at Oxford Academy and Western, will replace Kobayashi as girls coach.

    As girls coach, Kobayashi led Savanna to a 22-18 Orange League record and 42-46 overall, with three consecutive CIF appearances and lead the Rebels to the quarterfinals.

    On the boys side, Kobabayshi led the program to a 35-47 overall record and 19-20 in league. Before taking over, the program had an overall record of 12-43 and 5-25 in league.

    Boys volleyball: O.C. players selected to U.S. Youth Team

    Corona del Mar's Brandon Browning, San Clemente's Kyler Presho, Beckman's Jack Mathews and Laguna Beach's Cole Paxson were selected to the U.S. Boys' Youth National Team.

    The team will compete at the NORCECA U-19 Continental Championships, June 24-29 in Havana, Cuba.

    The U.S. is the defending champion and will compete this year in its opening pool against Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The second pool will consists of Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, Jamaica and Mexico.

    Volleyball: Orange County All-Star matches set for Friday (6/3)

    The 39th annual county all-star matches will take place Friday (6/3) at Newport Harbor HS. The girls match will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at approximately 7:30 p.m.

    Proceeds from the game will be used to support the family of Lucy Fisher. Fisher is the younger sister of Owen Fisher,. who plays for the Balboa Bay 14s team. Lucy Fisher was born with a "soft" heart murmur.

    Boys volleyball: Trabuco Hills wins SLO Tournament

    The Trabuco Hills boys volleyball team had a successful weekend winning the SLO Tournament. The Mustangs went 6-0 in pool play. They defeated Las Vegas, California and West Ranch in the Gold Division playoffs.

    Outside hitter Jack Flynn was selected tournament MVP. Setter Ryan Mysko and outside hitter Chase Moothart earned all-tournament honors.

    Boys volleyball: Friday recap from Best of the West

    The Huntington Beach boys volleyball team had a perfect first day at the Best of the West Invitational.

    The Oilers swept El Segundo (25-23, 25-15), Del Norte (25-12, 25-19) and Highland (25-8, 25-13) to win Pool 1 and increase their winning streak to 116 consecutive matches.

    The Oilers will face Buchanan of Clovis in the first round of the Gold Division playoffs.

    Newport Harbor also went 3-0 in its pool, sweeping Otay Ranch (25-23, 25-16), St. John Bosco (25-17, 25-6) and Buchanan (25-22, 25-23). The Sailors were the second seed in Pool 7.

    Newport Harbor will face El Segundo in the first round of the playoffs.

    Boys volleyball: Best of the West Invitational on tap

    Huntington Beach brings its 113 consecutive match winning streak into this year's Best of the West Invitational.

    The Oilers are the defending back-to-back champions of the two-day tournament. They are the overall top seed in the tournament and are in Pool 1 along with Highland, El Segundo and Del Norte.

    Loyola is the top seed in pool 2, along with Valencia, Servite and Poway.

    Corona del Mar is the top seed in pool 3. The Sea Kings are grouped with Newbury Park, Clovis and Westview.

    Mira Costa is the top seed in pool 4. The Mustangs are joined by Mater Dei, Carlsbad and Dos Pueblos.

    Huntington Beach ties national record with 112th consecutive win

    The top-ranked Huntington Beach boys volleyball tied the all-time national record for consecutive victories Thursday with a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 home victory over Saddleback Valley Christian.

    The Oilers have now won 112 consecutive matches, tying the record set by Salem High of New Hampshire (2004-09).

    The Oilers can break the record Tuesday when they visit Servite for a nonleague match.

    Sean Morrissey led the Oilers with 21 kills in the match against SVC.
