    Boys volleyball: Trabuco Hills wins SLO Tournament

    The Trabuco Hills boys volleyball team had a successful weekend winning the SLO Tournament. The Mustangs went 6-0 in pool play. They defeated Las Vegas, California and West Ranch in the Gold Division playoffs.

    Outside hitter Jack Flynn was selected tournament MVP. Setter Ryan Mysko and outside hitter Chase Moothart earned all-tournament honors.

    Boys volleyball: Friday recap from Best of the West

    The Huntington Beach boys volleyball team had a perfect first day at the Best of the West Invitational.

    The Oilers swept El Segundo (25-23, 25-15), Del Norte (25-12, 25-19) and Highland (25-8, 25-13) to win Pool 1 and increase their winning streak to 116 consecutive matches.

    The Oilers will face Buchanan of Clovis in the first round of the Gold Division playoffs.

    Newport Harbor also went 3-0 in its pool, sweeping Otay Ranch (25-23, 25-16), St. John Bosco (25-17, 25-6) and Buchanan (25-22, 25-23). The Sailors were the second seed in Pool 7.

    Newport Harbor will face El Segundo in the first round of the playoffs.

    Boys volleyball: Best of the West Invitational on tap

    Huntington Beach brings its 113 consecutive match winning streak into this year's Best of the West Invitational.

    The Oilers are the defending back-to-back champions of the two-day tournament. They are the overall top seed in the tournament and are in Pool 1 along with Highland, El Segundo and Del Norte.

    Loyola is the top seed in pool 2, along with Valencia, Servite and Poway.

    Corona del Mar is the top seed in pool 3. The Sea Kings are grouped with Newbury Park, Clovis and Westview.

    Mira Costa is the top seed in pool 4. The Mustangs are joined by Mater Dei, Carlsbad and Dos Pueblos.

    Huntington Beach ties national record with 112th consecutive win

    The top-ranked Huntington Beach boys volleyball tied the all-time national record for consecutive victories Thursday with a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 home victory over Saddleback Valley Christian.

    The Oilers have now won 112 consecutive matches, tying the record set by Salem High of New Hampshire (2004-09).

    The Oilers can break the record Tuesday when they visit Servite for a nonleague match.

    Sean Morrissey led the Oilers with 21 kills in the match against SVC.

    DeFalco selected to play for U.S. in Pan-Am Games

    Two-time Register boys volleyball player of year TJ DeFalco (Huntington Beach High) was selected to the 12-man U.S. roster for the upcoming Pan American Games.

    The U.S. will compete in Pool B with Canada Mexico and Puerto Rico.

    Pool A consists of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Cuba.

    The U.S. will open play against Puerto Rico on July 17, followed by matches against Mexico (July 19) and Canada (July 21).

    UC Irvine opposite hitter Zack La Cavera, who was the county player of the year in 2011 from Mater Dei, is also on the roster. La Cavera was the 2015 MPSF Player of the year for the Anteaters.

    Skolnik takes over as Edison boys volleyball coach

    Edison girls volleyball coach Matt Skolnik will also coach the boys volleyball team, Athletic Director Rich Boyce confirmed Tuesday. Skolnik replaces Trent Jackson as the boys coach.

    Boys volleyball: Locals selected to youth national training team

    Two-time Register boys volleyball player of the year TJ DeFalco (Huntington Beach) headlines the list of county players selected to the 25-player boys Youth National Training Team for the FIVB U19 World Championships.

    Tyler Alter (Laguna Beach), Noah Dyer (Saddleback Valley Christian), Sam Kobrine (Corona del Mar) and Josh Tuaniga (Huntington Beach) are also on the list.

    DeFalco and Tuaniga were members of the 2014 team that won the NORCECA Continental Championship.

    The 25-man roster will meet in July in Iowa for training. After that 12-man roster will be finalized.

    The U19 championships will take place Aug. 14-23 in Argentina.
