CIF-SS to reduce playoff teams in 10 sports

January 29th, 2014, 2:19 pm by By STEVE FRYER

The CIF-Southern Section Council today approved a proposal that will reduce the number of playoff teams in several sports, including baseball, softball and soccer.

Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, teams that do not finish high enough in their leagues' final standings to automatically qualify for the playoffs still must have overall records of .500 or better to qualify as at-large playoff teams, but there must be openings in the bracket for at-large teams.

Previously, wild-card round games were created to involve all .500-or-better teams. Now, .500-or-better teams could could be denied a playoff berth if their division lacks an opening.

The sports affected are baseball, boys and girls soccer, softball, boys and girls water polo, boys and girls tennis and boys and girls volleyball.

The CIF-SS Council also voted to support a CIF State proposal that would create state swimming and diving championships. That proposal goes to a vote of the CIF State Federated Council that meets Friday and Saturday. The CIF-Southern Section is one of 10 sections in the state CIF.

January 8th, 2014, 4:18 pm by By MARK COOPER

Troy High has hired Will Fritz to take over as its boys and girls tennis coach.

Fritz, who teaches French at Sunny Hills, previously coached at Diamond Ranch of Pomona and John Glenn of Norwalk. He was officially hired as coach at Troy on Tuesday.

He takes over one of the most successful programs in the county. Troy’s girls team has not lost a Freeway League match since 1995 and the boys team is 59-1 in league play since 2008.

“I’m very excited,” Fritz said. “It was a huge aspect that was missing from my life. I love that aspect of working with high school kids.”

On the girls side, Fritz replaces Donna Judd, who retired after coaching for 22 seasons. The Warriors have won 181 consecutive league matches. Troy went 17-2 this season.
