    Basketball: San Clemente's Crankshaw commits to Westmont

    San Clemente senior boys basketball player Nick Crankshaw committed to Westmont, San Clemente announced today.

    Crankshaw, a 6-foot-4 guard/forward, was Sea View League co-MVP with teammate Sam Darnold and was All-Orange County fifth team.

    Basketball: Hambrick resigns at San Juan Hills

    Kelly Hambrick resigned as boys basketball coach at San Juan Hills, the school announced Thursday.

    Hambrick coached the Stallions for seven years. San Juan Hills principal Tom Ressler reported via email that Hambrick resigned to create time for his family.

    San Juan Hills in the 2014-15 season finished 14-13 overall and was third in the Sea View League with a 3-3 league record. The Stallions lost to Temescal Canyon in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A playoffs.

    Boys basketball: MD plays Wednesday

    Mater Dei's game against Bishop Montgomery in the CIF Southern California Regionals Open Division in Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach. Bishop Montgomery is the home team, but the Knights' gym is not larger enough for a game like this. All other regionals games are Tuesday.

    Mater Dei is the only Orange County team still playing in the boys hoops regionals.

    Boys basketball: Regionals today

    CIF Southern California Regionals, Second round (all games 6 p.m.)

    Division II: La Mirada (27-5) at Canyon (24-9). La Mirada lost to Compton in the CIF-Southern Section 2A semifinals. Canyon is 2AA champion. Including its 98-65 win over Kearny in the regionals first round Wednesday, Canyon has scored 201 points over its past two games. La Mirada beat Canyon, 61-56, in an Orange Holiday Classic semifinal in late December. The winner of this game plays the Compton-Hanford winner in the semifinals Tuesday.

    Division 3: Corona del Mar (25-7) at Damien of La Verne (25-5). Corona del Mar is on the road again in the regionals after winning at El Cajon Valley in the first round Wednesday, 46-33. CdM lost to Beverly Hills in the CIF-SS 3A final. Damien played in the Open Division: a first-round loss to Orange Lutheran; a consolation second-round win ove Alemany; a consolation semifinals loss to Redondo. Damien is No. 17 in the California top 20. The winner plays the Beverly Hills-Cantwell Sacred Heart winnner in the semifinals.

    Division 3: Sonora (29-4) at Alemany of Mission Hills (22-8). CIF-SS 3AA champion Sonora beat Valhalla by a lot, 101-74, in the regionals first round Wednesday. Alemany beat West Bakersfield 72-49. Alemany played in the CIF-SS Open Division. It lost to Centennial of Corona in the first round and to Damien in the consolation second round.The winner plays the Gahr-Cathedral winner in the semifinals.

    Division 6: Orangewood Academy (22-12) at Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth (22-4): Orangewood, CIF-SS Division 6 champion, won a regionals first-round home game against Caruthers, 68-63. Sierra Canyon, No. 6 in the state top 20, played in the Open Division of the CIF-SS playoffs. It beat St. John Bosco in the first round and lost to Etiwanda by five points in the second round. The winner plays the St. Benard-Viewpoint winner in the semifinals.

    O.C. all-star game set for March 21

    An Orange County boys basketball all-star game will be played at Irvine Valley College on March 21. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

    The event begins with an eighth-grade game at 5 p.m.

    Open Gym Premier is organizing and managing the event.

    Eddie Courtemarche of Los Alamitos will coach the South team. Servite’s John Morris will coach the North.

    Admission is $10.

    Boys basketball: Berokoff resigns at El Modena

    Jeff Berokoff resigned as boys varsity basketball coach at El Modena, athletic director Ed Drzanek announced today.

    Berokoff coached the Vanguards for six seasons. This season, El Modena finished 8-20 overall and 1-5 in the North Hills League. The Vanguards lost to Savanna in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section 2A playoffs.

    Drzanek said the school is accepting applications its next boys basketball coach.

    Berokoff was an All-CIF player at Sonora in the 1990s.

    Basketball: MD date change; OLu doubleheader

    The Etiwanda-Mater Dei boys basketball playoff game will be played Tuesday at Mater Dei. It was scheduled for Saturday. Mater Dei has a major fundraiser event taking place off campus that day and Etiwanda has a girls basketball playoff game that day, too.

    Both schools must agree to any such schedule change which also must be approved by the CIF-SS office.

    It will be an Orange Lutheran doubleheader Saturday at Hope University in Fullerton. Lutheran's girls team plays Lompoc there at 4 p.m. The Lancers boys play Bishop Montgomery of Torrance at Hope at 7 p.m.

    Boys basketball: Esperanza-Servite sold out

    Today's Esperanza vs. Servite boys basketball game is sold out.

    Don't show up unless you have a ticket ... or a CIF press credential!

    That is a CIF-Southern Section Division 3A quarterfinal game at Servite. The winner advances to the 3A semifinals to play the winner of Beverly Hills-Gabrielino on Friday.

    Basketball: Brodbeck "iffy" for this week

    Esperanza senior guard Jarrett Brodbeck, a top candidate for All-County first-team honors, might not be able to play this week because of an eye injury. Brodbeck was struck in an eye during the second quarter of the Aztecs’ win Friday over Villa Park and did not return to the court. Esperanza plays Foothill and Canyon this week, two huge Crestview League games.
