Basketball: MD date change; OLu doubleheader

February 26th, 2015, 3:37 pm by By STEVE FRYER

The Etiwanda-Mater Dei boys basketball playoff game will be played Tuesday at Mater Dei. It was scheduled for Saturday. Mater Dei has a major fundraiser event taking place off campus that day and Etiwanda has a girls basketball playoff game that day, too.

Both schools must agree to any such schedule change which also must be approved by the CIF-SS office.

It will be an Orange Lutheran doubleheader Saturday at Hope University in Fullerton. Lutheran's girls team plays Lompoc there at 4 p.m. The Lancers boys play Bishop Montgomery of Torrance at Hope at 7 p.m.

Basketball: Brodbeck "iffy" for this week

February 9th, 2015, 5:23 pm by By STEVE FRYER

Esperanza senior guard Jarrett Brodbeck, a top candidate for All-County first-team honors, might not be able to play this week because of an eye injury. Brodbeck was struck in an eye during the second quarter of the Aztecs’ win Friday over Villa Park and did not return to the court. Esperanza plays Foothill and Canyon this week, two huge Crestview League games.

    "Learn For Morgan" at Esperanza

February 9th, 2015, 5:17 pm by By STEVE FRYER

Esperanza has dedicated this school week and especially its boys basketball home game Thursday against Canyon to Morgan B. Wilson and her foundation, “Learn For Morgan.” Morgan was an Esperanza student who died last summer from complications related to a heart condition. Purple was her favorite color, so purple will be the color of the day Thursday when, too, “Learn For Morgan” shirts will be sold for $10 to raise money for the foundation.

    Basketball: Fryer's top 10 vote

February 2nd, 2015, 10:38 am by By STEVE FRYER

How I voted on the Orange County boys basketball top 10 today (I am one of five voters on The Registe Media Poll panel) ...

    1. Mater Dei (19-3 overall record); 2. Orange Lutheran (19-3);3. Sonora (19-3); 4. Santa Margarita (14-5); 5. Tustin (20-2); 6. Foothill (19-3); 7. Edison (18-5); 8. Los Alamitos (19-2); 9. Canyon (15-7); 10. Esperanza (18-5).

Santa Margarita lost twice last week, but both losses were to good Trinity League teams -- Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.

Tustin beat Foothill, so the Tillers get No. 5. Maybe Esperanza is better than Canyon; we will find out Tuesday when Esperanza plays at Canyon.

    Basketball: Fryer's top 10 vote

January 19th, 2015, 12:35 pm by By STEVE FRYER

How I voted in the Orange County Register media poll for the county boys basketball top 10:

    1. Mater Dei; 2. Santa Margarita; 3. Orange Lutheran; 4. Sonora; 5. Tustin; 6. Foothill; 7. Los Alamitos; 8. Canyon; 9. Edison; 10. Esperanza.

Santa Margarita played Mater Dei closer than Orange Lutheran did. ... Canyon beat Los Alamitos in December, but Los Al might be playing better right now ... Really, though, teams 4-8 are very close, and Edison and Esperanza are so close to being in that group, too.

Orange Holiday Classic: Great 3rd-place game

December 30th, 2014, 8:45 am by By STEVE FRYER

In Monday's semifinals, Canyon lost to La Mirada, and Foothill lost to Orange Lutheran.

That means we get a great Crestview League preview today in the 6:50 p.m. game at Hope International University in Fullerton: Canyon vs. Foothill. Canyon is ranked No. 3 and Foothill is No. 4 in the Orange County top 10.

Canyon and Foothill are in the four-team Crestview League. Villa Park and Espeanza are the other two Crestview teams. Villa Park is No. 10 in Orange County; Esperanza was in the top 10 earlier this season.

Orange Lutheran, No. 2 in the county, plays La Mirada in the tournament championship game today at Hope at 8:30 p.m.

There is a parking fee at Hope of a few dollar, so prepare for that if you go.

Basketball: Pflueger lists top five schools

July 29th, 2014, 2:23 pm by BY ANTONIO MORALES

Mater Dei senior guard Rex Pflueger trimmed his college choices down to five potential schools on Tuesday afternoon.

In a Twitter post, Pflueger said the final five are (in no order): Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Cal, Washington State and San Diego State.

Pflueger averaged 12 points and five assists a game as a junior. He was named second-team All-County by the Register.

Pflueger was also named All-Trinity League and All-CIF Open Division first team. He was a key cog in Mater Dei's run to CIF Southern Section and State titles in 2014.

In the spring of 2013, Pflueger transferred from JSerra and joined the Monarchs.
