    Basketball: Cage commits to Oregon

    Mater Dei senior center MJ Cage committed to Oregon, Monarchs coach Gary McKnight said today.

    Cage, 6-foot-10, Cage was a Trinity League co-player of the year and All-CIF Open Division first team selection. He was the only non-senior on the All-County first team last season. He averaged 13.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots a game.

    McKnight said Cage had made visits to Arizona, San Diego State and most recently Oregon.

    Basketball: Zeller new coach at Mission Viejo

    Chris Zeller will be announced as boys basketball coach at Mission Viejo, upon Saddleback Valley Unified School District approval.

    His appointment as head coach already is at, the school's boys basketball website.

    Zeller has most recently been an assistant coach at Trabuco Hills. He previously coached at Corona del Sol High in Arizona while attending Arizona State.

    Zeller played at Santa Margarita before transferring to Mission Viejo. His brother Evan was an All-County player at Mission Viejo.

    Rob Cullinan coached the Diablos last year. He had to leave the position to deal with ongoing back problems that have required surgery.

    Update: Former Mater Dei star Stanley Johnson's mother dies after cancer fight

    Karen Taylor, the mother of former Mater Dei basketball star Stanley Johnson, died Saturday.

    Taylor, 54, had battled breast cancer for more than 20 years, according to her family.

    A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday (Aug. 6) at 10 a.m. at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton. The burial will be at Loma Vista Memorial Park.

    In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Susan G. Komen Foundation.

    New boys basketball coaches at Orange, Westminster

    Tim Williams is the varsity boys basketball coach at Orange, Orange athletic director Mitch Ryan confirmed Wednesday morning.

    Williams has been an assistant coach at Northwood.

    We are pursuing confirmation that C.J. Hollingsworth is the new coach of the Westminster boys basketball team. Hollingsworth has been an assistant coach at Villa Park.

    Basketball: Today's news

    Servite 6-foot-11 center Jacob Hugles, who will be a junior this coming school year, has scholarship offers from Montana and Washington State.

    Trey Smith transferred to Saddleback Valley Christian from St. John Bosco, SVC coach Tom Lewis confirmed today. Smith, a 6-2 guard who will be a junior this coming school year, averaged 5 points a game for the Braves in the 2014-15 season.

    In the Sonora Summer Tournament over the weekend, Sonora lost to Ayala of Chino Hills in the championship game. San Clemente advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.

    Basketball: Gomez resigns at Segerstrom

    Adrian Gomez, the only boys basketball coach at Segerstrom since the school opened in 2005, resigned, school athletic director Nick Canzone announced today via email.

    Gomez previously was boys basketball coach at Santa Ana.

    The Jaguars in the 2014-15 season finished third in the Golden West League with a 6-4 league record. They lost to Tesoro in the first round of the 2AA playoffs.

    Segerstrom was Golden West League champion in the 2010-11 season.

    Basketball: CVC's Okolue signs with Evangel

    Capistrano Valley Christian 6-foot-10 senior center Simon Okolue today signed a letter of intent with University of Evangel, CVC announced today.

    Evangel is in Springfield, Mo.

    Okolue averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds in the 2014-15 season.

    Okolue is still what would be categorized as "a project" -- a player with good potential who must continue to work on basic skills and the intracacies of the game. Once he gets all that down, he could be a fine college player.

    Baskeball: Dunn new coach at Bosco

    Matt Dunn is leaving Damien of La Verne to become basketball coach at St. John Bosco.

    St. John Bosco made the announcement today.

    Dunn coached Damien for 12 seasons. Damien was CIF State Division III champion this past season. Damian was a CIF-Southern Section championship in 2013.

    St. John Bosco in 2014-15 finished 17-12 overall and 5-5 in the Trinity League. The Braves played in the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs in which they were eliminated by Long Beach Poly in a consolation semifinal.

    Derrick Taylor resigned as Bosco coach after this past season.

    Basketball: Mater Dei's Parker to attend Air Force Academy

    Mater Dei senior shooting guard La'Vette Parker is going to the Air Force Academy, Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight announced today.

    Parker, 6-foot-2 and a terrific outside shooter, was second in Monarchs scoring this past season at 16 points a game. He led the team in 3-pointers with 81.

    Parker was especially good in the playoffs. He scored 23 points against Chino Hills in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs, and in the CIF Southern California Regionals scored 23 against Westchester and 21 against Bishop Montgomery.

    Basketball: Webster named coach at Fullerton College

    Perry Webster, a former All-County player at Mission Viejo who went on to play at Cal State Fullerton and coach at Saddleback College, was named men's basketball coach at Fullerton College on Wednesday.

    Webster, 26, was All-Orange County first team his senior year at Mission Viejo where he was a starting point guard since his freshman year. He played at Saddleback College and at Cal State Fullerton. He was an All-State player at Saddleback and led the Big West in assists at Cal State Fullerton.

    Webster coached at Saddleback the past three years. He played on a Saddleback College state championship team and was an assistant on this season's Gauchos state championship team.
