Bol's ex-coach retracts statement about the player's grades

January 13th, 2017, 8:53 am by By STEVE FRYER

The former coach for recent Mater Dei basketball transfer Bol Bol said Friday that a recent comment he made about the player’s grades was false.

Rick Zych, who coached the 7-foot-1 Bol at Bishop Miege High in Shawnee, Kan., had written in an email this month that Bol had “all F’s” when he left Bishop Miege in the fall. That statement was included in a Register story detailing Bol’s chances of being declared eligible to play at Mater Dei this season.

In his email Friday, Zych wrote “I hereby retract my statement communicated to you by e-mail on or about January 4, 2017 that Bol left Bishop Miege ‘with all F's.’ The statement that Bol had ‘all F's’ at the time of his withdrawal from Bishop Miege is not true.”

Bol, a junior, is considered one of the top players in the nation for his class.

A student-athlete's academic standing at his or her's previous school is examined by the CIF-Southern Section office as it prepares to rule on a transfer's eligibility at the new school.

Signing Day update: Villa Park's Evan Battey signs with Colorado

November 9th, 2016, 1:33 pm by By STEVE FRYER

Evan Battey can't play at Villa Park this coming season, his senior year. Battey, though, remains one of Orange County's most-prized basketball prospects.

He signed a letter of intent with Colorado on Wednesday, the first day of the one-week early signing period for basketball and many other sports.

Battey, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound senior forward, exausted his eight semesters of athletic eligibilty before this school year. He repeated his freshman year at Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies. He played basketball at LACES during his repeated freshman year and as a sophomore there before transferring to Villa Park before his sophomore year, 2015-16.

Although he did not play sports during his first freshman year at LACES, those two semesters still count toward the eight semesters of athletic eligibity each student-athlete has under CIF rules. So, adding the four semesters as a freshman, his two semesters as a sopohomore and his two semesters as a junior, Battey's eight semesters of athletic eligibility have been completed.

Battey took recruiting trips in September to Colorado, Purdue and Miami of Florida.
