    Basketball: Fryer's top 10 vote

January 19th, 2015, 12:35 pm by By STEVE FRYER

How I voted in the Orange County Register media poll for the county boys basketball top 10:

    1. Mater Dei; 2. Santa Margarita; 3. Orange Lutheran; 4. Sonora; 5. Tustin; 6. Foothill; 7. Los Alamitos; 8. Canyon; 9. Edison; 10. Esperanza.

Santa Margarita played Mater Dei closer than Orange Lutheran did. ... Canyon beat Los Alamitos in December, but Los Al might be playing better right now ... Really, though, teams 4-8 are very close, and Edison and Esperanza are so close to being in that group, too.

Orange Holiday Classic: Great 3rd-place game

December 30th, 2014, 8:45 am by By STEVE FRYER

In Monday's semifinals, Canyon lost to La Mirada, and Foothill lost to Orange Lutheran.

That means we get a great Crestview League preview today in the 6:50 p.m. game at Hope International University in Fullerton: Canyon vs. Foothill. Canyon is ranked No. 3 and Foothill is No. 4 in the Orange County top 10.

Canyon and Foothill are in the four-team Crestview League. Villa Park and Espeanza are the other two Crestview teams. Villa Park is No. 10 in Orange County; Esperanza was in the top 10 earlier this season.

Orange Lutheran, No. 2 in the county, plays La Mirada in the tournament championship game today at Hope at 8:30 p.m.

There is a parking fee at Hope of a few dollar, so prepare for that if you go.

    Basketball: Sweeney resigns at MLK

April 18th, 2014, 12:03 pm by By STEVE FRYER

Tim Sweeney submitted his resignation as boys basketball coach at M.L. King of Riverside. Sweeney said today he was requested to do so by school administration and by the Riverside Unified School District.

Sweeney said parental pressure is behind the request for his resignation.

"It's been two years of parental attacks," Sweeney said. "We have a rogue group of parents. Their whole intent was to get me out."

King won the CIF-Southern Section Division 1A championship this past season, Sweeney's 14th coaching the school's varsity team.

"Even after winning the title, they were still going after me," said Sweeney, who added that his health has been negatively affected by the situation.
