Kickoff 2012: Irvine preview

Outlook: The Vaqueros are looking for a big year from junior quarterback Ryan Goodman, who passed for 1,011 yards last year and six touchdowns. Irvine does not have a lot of experience returning with five starters back on offense and three on defense. The Vaqueros could win some games on special teams this year with kicker Jeremiah Carter and punter Adam Searl. Carter made 19 of 20 field goals and 19 of 20 on extra points while Searl averaged 33 yards a punt. Defensively, cornerback Alex Cliatt (who also plays wide receiver) and linebacker David Cota (also a fullback) lead the way. Irvine should contend for one of the three playoff spots.
Factoid: Jeremiah Carter, the placekicker, had a 55 yard kickoff average with 40 percent landing in the end zone.

CB/WR Alex Cliatt: Cliatt, a senior, was second team all-league as a defensive back last year with 55 tackles, 6 pass break-ups and three interceptions. “He is a very good technician who plays the ball well in the air on defense,” said Coach Erik Terry. |

LB/FB David Cota: Cota, a senior, was honorable mention as a defensive end in 2011. He had 48 tackles, one for a loss. “David is so valuable we had to get him on the field last season at a position he had never played,” said Coach Erik Terry. “He returns to his natural position as a senior and will captain our defense.” |
