Laguna Beach-Estancia recap.
NEWPORT BEACH In its first Orange Coast League victory, Laguna Beach defeated Estancia, 17-13, at Newport Harbor on Friday night.
Estancia (5-5, 2-1) put the first points on the board in the middle of the first quarter with a 4-yard run from Carlos Mendez.
The Breakers (2-8, 1-2) scored all their points in the second quarter. On the first play of the quarter, quarterback Charley Bowman completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Paddon.
Later that quarter, Mendez ran the ball 5 yards for an Eagles’ touchdown only to have it called back on a penalty. Estancia failed to score on that drive, and Laguna Beach got the ball on its own 20-yard line.
Bowman completed the 80-yard TD drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak. With two seconds remaining in the first half, John Snedegar kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Laguna Beach a 17-7 lead.
Halfway through the third quarter, Mendez rushed another 4 yards into the end zone.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
For the Breakers, Zach Smith rushed for 109 yards on 27 carries, and Bowman finished with 71 passing yards and 70 rushing yards.
For the Eagles, Mendez rushed 28 times for 133 yards and Jason Moreno rushed for 59 yards in seven carries. Michael Arciga had an interception.
