    Estancia wins battle for bell

    NEWPORT BEACH Estancia rang the bell after defeating Costa Mesa, 41-13, in the Battle of the Bell at Newport Harbor High on Friday night.

    Costa Mesa (1-8, 1-1 in Orange Coast League) jumped out to a solid start when Antwon Byrd received a pass from Brian Waldron for a 72-yard touchdown on the first play after the kickoff. 

    Estancia (5-4, 2-0) scored two minutes later on a 20-yard pass from Radames Gutierrez to Eddie Tomasek. The Eagles kept the momentum and scored 21 points in the first quarter.

    Estancia scored a touchdown in each remaining quarter.

    Carlos Mendez led the way for the Eagles, rushing for 289 yards in 35 carries with three touchdowns.

    Ryan Redding combined with Gutierrez for two touchdowns and finished with 130 yards on three receptions.

    Gutierrez went 8 for 10 with 193 yards and three touchdown passes.

    For Costa Mesa, Byrd had 138 yards on four receptions, scoring both touchdowns. Waldron passed for 146 yards.
