Canyon's Grandbouche contributes all over

Notes from Orange County high school football:

Colton Grandbouche is a coach's dream.

He can play a number of positions, he can do it well and he will do it unselfishly.

Grandbouche is Canyon's leading wide receiver with 41 catches for 657 yards. He is also the kicker (41 extra points, five field goals, half of kickoffs into the end zone), punter (averaging 38 yards), punt returner, free safety and for good measure, the backup quarterback.

He has also blocked two field goals.

"He does it all," Canyon coach Brent McKee said.

He's also one of the reasons that the Comanches are still alive in the CIF-SS Southwest playoffs. In two playoff games, Grandbouche has nine receptions for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

McKee said that Grandbouche reminds him of former Canyon player David Buehler, who is now at USC.

He said that Grandbouche is garnering interest from several Division I-AA schools.

"If he concentrated on kicking, then he could be good," McKee said. "But he's also good enough to play wide receiver. …He's appealing.

"He's a great athlete and he's playing big for us right now."

• Mater Dei two-way player Christian Maldonado was released from Mission Viejo Community Hospital early Sunday and was back at school Monday, Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson confirmed.

Maldonado was injured in the final minute of Friday's Pac-5 quarterfinal against Tesoro.

• The Pac-5 semifinal between Moore League rivals Long Beach Poly and Lakewood will be played Friday at Cerritos College.

The Jackrabbits defeated the Lancers, 32-15, on Oct. 3. The winner of Friday's game will meet the Orange Lutheran-Tesoro winner for the Pac-5 championship.

• Exavier Edwards is healthy and he showed it in Friday's Pac-5 quarterfinal against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

Edwards, who battled through a bout with mononucleosis earlier this season, led the Lancers with 127 rushing yards on 15 carries.

"He had a tremendous game," Orange Lutheran coach Jim Kunau said. "We're just happy to get him healthy after all of those weeks he had to miss with mono."

The Lancers rushed for 316 yards against the Knights.

• There were several big performances from some of the county top running backs last week.

However, one performance that stood out was from Trabuco Hills junior running back Donnie Simonsen.

Simonsen entered Friday's Southwest quarterfinal against Western with only 13 carries on the season.

With injuries to Shane DeCillo  and Danny Arriloa, Simonsen became "the" guy. He responded with 191 rushing yards on 31 carries in a 28-21 victory.
