Canyon rolls over Fullerton to return to semifinals

ORANGE - For the second time this season, Canyon used big plays and a strong defensive showing to roll past Fullerton, 53-17, Friday night in a CIF-SS Southwest Division quarterfinal game played at Fred Kelly Stadium. 

The Comanches (8-4) advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 1979 and will play Century League rival Tustin.

"People said that this program had a two-year window and that this would be a rebuilding year," said Canyon coach Brent McKee. "We might rebuild all the way to Anaheim Stadium if they’re not careful."

Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, Comanche running backJared Gobert scored from 35-yards out to take 6-3 lead into the second quarter.

Canyon extended the lead to 12-3 early in the second and regained possession on the Indian 41-yard line following an eight-yard punt.

On the ensuing play, wide receiver Printice Cook took a pitch and decided to throw to Colton Grandbouche for a touchdown.

Canyon added two more scores, including a Gobert 65-yard touchdown run, to take a 33-10 lead at the half.

"We have put together good offensive games and good defensive games, but have never been in unison like this," said Gobert. "Last season we had a good team, but we are more prepared this year."

The Fullerton (9-3) rushing attack struggled against the physical Comanche defense. Running back Michael Allain was forced to leave the game in the second quarter after aggravating his ankle. He was held to 12 yards on five carries. Joseph Hill had limited success in replace of Allain. Hill was taken down in the backfield on eight of his 32 carries. He scored both of Fullerton’s touchdown on runs of three and 70 yards.

Canyon scored on six consecutive possession, including their opening two of the second half to take a 46-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Grandbouche finished with 157 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Gobert ran for 147 yards on 10 carries.

"It is right up there with our best performance of the year," said McKee. "Offensively we kept the balance and kept them off guard with the run and the pass game. The defense was very physical and shut down their run game early."
