Huntington Beach vs. Trabuco Hills. Game played at Trabuco Hills High.
MISSION VIEJO - You can't tell a book by its cover, and you can't tell a football game by its first three minutes.
Trabuco Hills, down seven points after the first series and failing to cover Huntington Beach's onside kick, rallied in fine fashion Friday with touchdowns on its first seven possessions en route to a 53-14 Sea View League victory.
Jason Mayer led the Mustangs' big night. He completed 10 of 10 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns - 4 yards to Justen Lasch and 55 to Chris Simonton.
"From a leadership standpoint, he got us where we needed to be," said Coach Jason Negro, whose team is rebuilding after reaching the CIF-Southern Section Southwest title game last season.
"Having him back, it's a totally different feeling, a totally different team from the first three games."
Trabuco Hills (4-3, 2-0) has won four in a row since Mayer returned from a broken wrist suffered in the first game, against Laguna Hills.
The victory over visiting Huntington Beach (2-5, 0-2) sets the stage for a confrontation at home next week against league favorite Foothill.
Trabuco Hills was unable to stop Huntington Beach's passing game in the first series. Sean Guite completed six passes to five receivers for 80 yards in an eight-play drive that consisted of nothing but passes.
After that, the Mustangs buckled down and took over.
Shane DeCillo carried 17 times for 126 yards, and Daniel Arriola carried nine times for 74 yards. Simonton, who scored on a 6-yard carry, caught two passes for 95 yards and a score.
"Both Foothill and Trabuco are very physical, well-coached teams," Oilers coach Eric Lo said. "It should be a good battle for the league championship."
