The Monarchs come out firing with Matt Barkley, who tosses 4 TDs in first half.
SANTA ANA - Behind a defensive shutout and another offensive gem, Mater Dei ran past visiting JSerra, 42-0, Friday night in a Trinity League game at Santa Ana Stadium.
The No. 3 Monarchs have now kept opponents scoreless in six consecutive quarters, after blanking Servite in the second half of last week's victory.
"Outstanding performance tonight," Coach Bruce Rollinson said. "We played the pitch, we played the dive, and we played the quarterback well. We really rallied around each other and kept our focus."
Quarterback Matt Barkley came out firing in the first half, going 11 of 15 for 179 yards. Barkley tossed four touchdowns in the opening half, two going to Christian Maldonado and two going to Victor Blackwell.
Mater Dei (5-2, 2-0) outgained the Lions, 286 yards to 54, to take a 42-0 lead into halftime.
JSerra did not cross the 50-yard line until it recoverd a Mater Dei fumble at the Monarchs 833-yard line early in the third quarter. The Lions advanced the ball to the 2-yard line, but could not convert on a fourth-and-goal, giving the ball back to Mater Dei.
Barkley converted on throws of 27 and 45 yards to quickly move the ball back into JSerra territory. Running back Dylan Price capped the nine-play drive with a 9-yard run.
Barkley's night ended early as he finished 16 of 22 for 275 yards.
The Monarchs' stifling defense did not allow the Lions to reach the century mark in total yards. JSerra (5-2, 0-2) finished with 99 yards of offense and turned the ball over three times.
Joseph Schmidt and Michael Hurtado each intercepted Lions' quarterback Hayden Greene.
JSerra was led offensively by Joey Kimpler who had 11 rushes for 31 yards.
