Villa Park gets 'Crafty' in win over El Modena
Spartans' reserve tailback gains 143 yards in victory.
No problem.
Led by reserve tailback W. Clay Craft, the Spartans easily defeated El Modena, 38-14, at Fred Kelly Stadium.
Craft, who was filling in for injured starter Jacob Alvarado (shoulder), rushed for a career-high 143 yards and two touchdowns in sparking an offense that was averaging just under 12 points a game.
“Clay certainly gave us a lift,” Spartans co-coach Pat Mahoney said. “Hopefully this (game) will help us get over the hump offensively.”
Villa Park (3-3, 1-0) was never challenged as it scored the game’s first 31 points. The Spartans amassed 367 total yards — 224 on the ground thanks to offensive linemen Connor Pogue, Joseph Martinez, Steven Fieeki, Miguel Eizenga, Travis Beigle and Michael Cuccia.
“We just didn’t come to play tonight,” Vanguards coach Greg Olquin said.“I know we’re young, but somebody has to step up and show some leadership.”
Villa Park quarterback Tyler Watkins completed 7 of 10 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Chris Barnett led El Modena (1-5, 0-1) with 83 yards rushing and one touchdown.
