Big performances give way to bigger games
Take a look back at Week 3 and ahead to Week 4.
Brea Olinda linebacker Jeremy Licona spent last year as a backup to Kory Johnson, a first-team All-Century League linebacker.
Through the first three games of the season, Licona has picked up where Johnson left off.
The senior linebacker has been all over the field, recording 45 tackles through the first three games for the Wildcats (1-2).
"He's a good kid and he's playing well for us," Brea Olinda coach Robb Perrance said. "He has a nose for the ball and seems to get there. He's been pretty consistent."
Perrance added that a key to Licona's performance has been his approach to the game.
"You have to be disciplined to play any position," Perrance said. "He's (Licona) finally figured it out.
• Allan Bridgford, who set a new school-record for single-game passing yards Friday (442) wasn't the only Mission Viejo player rewrite the record books.
Senior Kevin Chandler's 235 receiving yards also moved him to the top of the line for single-game reception yards.
Chandler passed the previous mark of 173 yards set by Keith Gapausen and Eric Ekdahl, both were accomplished in 1989.
The top-ranked Diablos (4-0) will play host to Murrieta Valley on Friday.
• Magnolia has playoffs on its mind this season. The most recent postseason appearance for the Sentinels came in 1984.
If it were up to Robert Cruz, the futility will end this season.
Cruz, a senior running back, began the season with 19 yards rushing against Calvary Chapel. Since then, he's been stuck on 343 …twice.
Cruz rushed for 343 yards against Katella (Sept.12) and Estancia (Friday). Next up is Corona del Mar on Thursday night.
• Along with the nonleague showdown between No. 3 Mater Dei and No. 5 Edison at Orange Coast College, here is a list of top games this week: Tesoro-El Dorado (Thursday), Dana Hills-Newport Harbor, Los Alamitos-La Habra and Tustin-Western. All games begin at 7 p.m.
• This year's Mater Dei-Servite game will be played at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 17. It is the Trinity League opener for both teams.
Mater Dei plays Edison on Friday while the Friars have a bye.
Next week, the roles will be reversed as Mater Dei will be on its bye while Servite will be playing Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (Oct. 10).
